Hey, folks! Haven't checked-in in a while but I figured I would since I have Ember back in my hands after a short tour over at changstar, and I also picked up an HE-6. Oh, and I was out of the loop long enough to need beg Jeremy for the growingly popular 6SN7 adapter/tube. I've only just started listening to her again, and I have a lot to try out, but my main focus has been the HE-6. On that front, the Ember doesn't even choke. On low gain (with most tubes), I have to get the knob up to around 2:00 average. On high gain, I settle around 10:00. For the "least efficient headphone on the market", I'd say this is pretty great! The Sylvania 6SN7 tube I have on hand is crystal clear, but I've been preferring my Amperex Bugle 6DJ8 for the added warmth on the HE-6. I know these aren't in depth impressions, but it's always nice to have another person chalk a 'yes' the "HE-6?" column. Now back to thinking about FrankenEmber... I have the Frankenember setup with no intention of using it if you're interested. Drop me a PM here or over at Changstar... May I ask why? Loads of people seem to love that setup (I haven't tried it myself).

Are there any complications with using the different 6SN7 variations? 6SN7GT/6SN7GTB/6SN7WGTA/etc? I'm not familiar with the designations.

Loads of people seem to love that setup (I haven't tried it myself). Part of this is that the white caps on my setup won't stay on top of the tubes by themselves. I'm sure I could pull the metal contacts out of the caps with pliers and bend them a little, which would be a pretty easy fix. The guy that sent me the Frankenember setup (MattTCG) used rubber bands to hold the caps in place, which I'm sure also works fine. The aesthetics are already so bad, what difference could a couple of rubber bands make? But, all of this said, I'm enjoying my other tubes so much that I'm having a hard time finding the motivation. I prefer simplicity. Is the sound upgrade really significant enough to justify the hassle? Obviously it is for some, but I'm having too much fun listening to music at the moment to feel like messing with it.

I had the same problem as most folks with the caps not fitting. All I did was bend the wire leads around a little and they stay quite well. If you like the 6sn7's you should like the 7193's also maybe a little better. I don't use any of my 9 pin tubes anymore, I have some nice 12ax7 mullard 3 amperex 12at7 bugle boys Telefunken 12at7CV2024 mullard and amperex 12ax7 bugle boy lots of 6an7,s including some vt 231's a mink Ken Rad VT231 and of all of these I keep coming back to the Ken Rad 7193 all four from 1943 and nos. I change them out occasionally, listen for a week or two and then go back to the 7193's and like them better, not night and day mind you but especially in the sound stage. This is my preference yours may differ, but if you already have the adapter and tubes give it a try, or make me an offer for all my other tubes!!! Good listening.

I've actually been listening to the stock tube that came with the Ember & you know what? It's not half bad. My Ember took a while to get here and in the interim I'd already purchased some 6SN7's so, apart from day one, the 6SN7's have been in rotation ever since. Now I'm thinking the stock ECC82 needs a bit of time to burn in before it reaches it's potential. I still think the 6SN7's are better but it's not a clear advantage any more.
Anyway, back to the music.

Possibly not the best & I'm looking for guidance as to where to go next. I would say it sounds smaller than the 6SN7's but in a nice way. Difficult to describe.

I confirm what you said... if i had not already buy the 7193 twins tubes i would have bought the Shuguang Treasure CV-181 6SN7GT... i had read some review that equal it to the 7193...and its more simple: only one adapter to buy....best regards I have only seen one person using this tube with the Ember, are there more posts? If you are thinking about the Shuguang Treasure you might want to read this forum page on 6sn7's including the CV's www.audioasylum.com/cgi/vt.mpl?f=tubes&m=265085

I would have to agree. Since I first introduced FrankenEmber I have not listened to anything else other than variations on the 7193. I have over 100 tubes that now sit in boxes, I should probably rotate some of them in just to remind me why I keep the 7193's. I have been playing around with the ember. For those of you who like to do a lot of comparisons with the gain jumpers I found a nice little switch that changes both settings at once. Although the pin spacing between the two rows is just a tad narrow but you can spread them to work. I also found a spike set I had laying around and decided to put them on the Ember, mostly for looks but damn if it doesn't sound a little better. Things are a little crisper on the highs not day and night but better. I still am not sure how to make pictures bigger. I guess if you click on them they open bigger but still not big like I have seen in other posts.

I just found some Audio-Technics isolators I used to use under my turntable to isolate the amp. When the tubes were first turned on they would be a little microphonic, if I hit the desk, you could hear the tubes distort, but with the cushions have had no problem at all, except when the wife came in to the room and wanted to know why I was pounding on the desk, told her it was a bug, easier to explain.

Great picture-reminds me I have stored away somewhere some squelchy feet from an old DiscMagic-I must try and find them. I am also enjoying using my new Ember with dual 6J5's. They seem to combine the warmth of my 'Bad Boy' with the detail and sound-stage of the 7193's.

I could not resist myself...I am weak to temptation It sounds very very good indeed! I was very skeptic to my own impulse when I ordered the setup, but I am glad I did. So far, I have not found anything like this :-) I looks horrible though...

I guess if you click on them they open bigger but still not big like I have seen in other posts. I'm learning how to post pictures so please forgive if this doesn't work right. I replied to earlier posts regarding the 7193 to 12AU7 adapter. As it arrived it did not work due to pins 4 and 5 being shorted together and pin 9 connected.
I removed the short and moved the wire from pin 9 to pin 4. Voila--it worked. At that point, though, the adapter was too sort to clear the output caps. I had a longer post in my junk box, so I replaced the post between the socket and the PCB. Then I replaced the screws connecting the insulator under the PCB so they rest on the top of the caps, a kind of tripod. I put a plastic piece on top of the caps where the screws rest, just in case. So now the FE rests solidly and does not shift.
So what I have now is a "shorty FE", if you will.
The Sunrise next to it is one I built years ago and has the 6SN7 adapter on it. So, using Grados (32 ohm) I can get a "fair" A/B comparison between the 7193 and 6SN7
The "shorty" has one less adapter in the circuit. I have the 6SN7 to 7193 adapter also. I have compared the two FEs and is there a difference? Not that my ears can tell. While in my ordering frenzy, I got two 7193s for $15 shipped from the same eBay seller that I got the adapters. In comparing them against the Ken Rads I found then close enough to well worth the $15.

You're almost there mate I'm going to assume you're doing this on a standard desktop browser. It's sadly not quite so straightforward when using a mobile app (at least on Android anyway). OK, I'm using Firefox. 1. Navigate within Photobucket to the image you want to share & you'll see 4 options to the right of the image. You want to left-click once in the box marked Direct.. 2. Navigate to the thread on DIYAH in which you want to insert the image and hit the REPLY button to open up the full text editor interface.. 3. Once the editor is open you'll notice a group of 9 buttons at the top rightish of the page. You want to hit the 3rd from the left. This looks like a photo of a lanscape scene and is the INSERT IMAGE button.. 4. This will open the INSERT IMAGE pop-up dialogue where you will paste (right-click, paste) the link you copied in step 1.. 5. Click INSERT IMAGE and you're done. Rinse & repeat. There's an even easier way once you have several images within Photobucket which cuts out the part where you navigate to the individual image. In Gallery Mode you just hover over the top-left corner of any image & it will give you the option to show Share Links. Just choose DIRECT as you did in Step 1 above. Notice I haven't posted your images myself. That's your task should you choose to accept it
