I've now taken the plunge and ordered me the 6j5 adapter and some russian tubes including Pinnacle and RCA 6J5GT. I was wondering if anyone have tried the metal-can tubes of the 6J5 variant? Or is this not recommended?

Or is this not recommended? Metal-can tubes are fine. I have tried a pair of National-Union 6J5G and am now using a pair of RCA 6J5 metal-cans. They both sound great and pretty much the same. I didn't notice any loss of quality with the 6J5 and they are totally non-microphonic, unlike the glass tubes which have varying degrees of micro phony. And the 6J5'S are typically somewhat to much less expensive than the 6J5G or GT.

A bit unrelated, after changing from the plastic chassis in my Ember to the CNC'ed one, I can confirm that most of the 9-pin tubes that where picking EMI in my office are now almost totally quiet, great relief! (Faraday cage effect?) I can now listen to the E88CC without trouble, the ones that seemed most affected by interference.

If they sound as good as my other 6J5 type tubes I may paint them to match the colour of the socket LED.

Okay Howie, I hope you have stock in the 6j5 tubes, just got the adapter and the ST bottles have about an hour on them, and so far, I am liking them a little better than the 7193's, bought a couple of the straight gt Sylavania's as well, but for now going to cook these in some more. My WALLET does not thank you, but I do. Good call on these.

Just wanted to thank Jeremy and Frans for doing such a fine job on the Ember, it is very versatile, and now using the 6JS5's I doubt if it can get better. Thought the dual 7193's were the best for awhile also. However, I have made that statement in the past, and had to eat my words. Probably why I gained weight! Kudos to you both. Get product and support.

Agreed.Have 3 hours on the tubes, sound is a little more open than the 7193's, a little more depth as well. Could live with either. Try the Sylvania's in a few days to see if they sound any different.. Thanks Howie

Can anyone suggest a good 48v power supply for the Ember? Mine's stopped working and I'm not sure exactly what to get.
I don't want to end up frying it with wrong polarity or something.

Thanks Howard and Frans. I was worried about polarity and plug size. The old one just refuses to work now and so it needs to be replaced. The one you sent with the Polaris is still going strong though Frans. Maybe because it's a medical one, it fixes itself? That looks great. Ordered one.

The meanwell stopped working? Interesting - did you try it with a different mains power cord? If it is in fact dead, I will shoot you over another. Ember uses a GS40A48-PJ1.

I did Jeremy. And checked fuse. No big deal, just one of those things. I've got a new supply on the way.
