Not really.
Settings will depend on the source output voltage, efficiency and impedance of the headphone(s) as well as how they respond to different impedances. Also depends on the used tube (within limits). Then there is personal preference/mood/taste etc.
There really is no right or wrong. What may be the best setting to person A may be very different from person B. Whatever setting sounds good to you on a specific headphone is the 'right' one.
Just play around with the settings.

Thanks Frans. I'm on the SBAF loaner list to give it a try and with only have a 2-3 days, I was trying to see if there were some good suggestions I'll just experiment with it when I get it.

I have been reading the Head-Fi tube rolling forum and I think I would like to try a 6sn7 type tube. I got the impression that they are a big step up from the standard tubes that plug in without an adapter. I also got the impression that really expensive pairs of tubes is the next level but I am trying to keep this hobby reasonable. Do any of you here believe it is worth the cost of an adapter to try the 6sn7 type tubes or are they just "other tubes". My recent wake up call was when I got a really cheap RCA 12au7a tube that sounds very different than another RCA 12au7 tube I have, and almost the same as a 6n6p tube I have. If identical looking tubes with similar part numbers can sound that different and very different specification tubes sound the same then I need to try something completely different (6sn7's) or realize that every tube is different and it may be impossible to pick a "best" one without hearing it personally. That would make me shy away from spending too much on any one tube...

You will need to buy the adapter from Jeremy for the 6SN7. Some users have also been using 6C8/6F8 (with yet another adaptor) which are also dual triodes (only one tube is needed) and you can find them relatively cheap.
EDIT: I have a few different 6SN7, 6C8 and 6J5. Honestly ...I could easily live with any of them without missing the rest. My advice is don't go crazy with tubes!

Yes, thanks tunkjazz, no crazy go... But do you agree that 6SN7 or 6J5 or 6C8 are in another league from 6N6P or 6DJ8 or 12AU7A? I thought 6SN7 was single tube and 6J5 was dual. I gather from your post that the adapters allow me to enter the world of dual triodes. I also understand that I would need to buy an adapter for dual triode use. I may not have made myself clear. In essence, I wonder if I should go the adapter route to in order experience these other tubes, buying an adapter just opens up more possibilities, only worth it if those tubes are very good. I should add that I am usually a solid state flat response kind of guy. My goal with the Ember is to enjoy the seductive nature of "euphonic" tube sound on a budget compared to my main speaker system which is rather expensive, the cost of a good economy car...

You will need an adapter for the 6SN7 (single tube), 7193 (dual tube), 6C8 (single tube) and 6J5 (dual tube).
In the case of the 6SN7, Jeremy makes a very good adapter. You can source on eBay most of the others (### to ECC88 IIRC). I found that all those (big) tubes in general give me the impression of a much bigger sounstage compared to many of the smaller ones. Small numbers statistics apply here though!

I have the Sunrise III at work. Man, what a capable amp. I really wanted some tube goodness at home too, but it gets super hot and my son would definitely find a way to burn himself on it.
So I have an Ember II on the way here from Jeremy as we speak.
I'm selling my Audio-GD Master-11 for multiple reasons, none of which are that I don't love it. It sounds incredible and is ultra capable. But, I only listen to music for 1-2 hours a night at home compared to the 8-12 at work, and I could use the money to extend an olive branch to the wife for all the money I've spend on audio these past few years.
Pretty excited to have an Ember II back in my welcoming arms. I kept debating whether I wanted an Ember, another Sunrise, or a Horizon. Ultimately, the Ember is the most flexible and won't burn children.
I'm just hoping I can get close to as much tube sweetness out of the Ember as I do the Sunrise.

I've spent the last few days reevaluating my system. As well as implementing various tweaks to my JRiver install I've bought the new Sonarworks Reference 3 VST plug-in and managed to acquire the HD 650 'No Limits' profile. On top of this I've implemented a nice wee boost at 10Hz (+9dB, Q-2.0) via JRiver's built-in parametric EQ. I can honestly say that this is the best sound I've ever heard, with one caveat. All the aforementioned hi-tech stuff only shows its best hand when paired with the valve (tube) above in place. It's a JAN 6SN7GT dating from 1945. JAN stands for Joint Army Navy. It was built for use by the Canadian Armed Services but this particular example is NOS (new old stock). Irreplaceable. Thanks Ron. Of course, none of this would be happening if it weren't for the Project Ember MkII and the flexibility it allows to further tweak the sound to perfection. High input gain, caps by-passed & low output Z.

Good to hear Sonarworks and the 6SN7GT (only the best for the Canadian military) are yielding good results! I've also learned something new today. I'd always wondered what JAN stood for so thanks for clearing that up. ps. I hope that is audiophile grade blu tack?? You can hear the difference in quality vs the cheap rubbish. Soundstage is wider, instrument separation better and bass is fuller and more layered

What do you mean by No Limits profile? Where can I find it? How is it difference from the regular HD 650 profile?
