I spent the morning Thursday rolling my tiny collection of favorite tubes and basically found that my new favorite is the Sylvania Silvertone 6SN7GTB and its required adapter that Jeremy picked out for me. It does not have as much bass as the GE smoked glass 6DJ8 that was my previous favorite but it has great soundstaging and a very balanced presentation across the frequency spectrum. I also like a Tung Sol 12AX7 that is very similar to the 6DJ8 mentioned, both have very full bass and forward midrange that tends to drown out some of the other information on the recordings I used to compare. The other tube that I really like is a old Russian 6n6p that Jeremy sent me with the Ember II. It is a polite tube and does everything well but in a relaxed way. So I guess I am saying that the big 6SN7GTB tube is certainly worth a listen! I think it is also interesting that I can understand the sound of my new Polaris better now. I actually got the 6SN7GTB tube with my new Polaris. At first I thought the Polaris sounded bass shy but I knew that should not be true. The Polaris is very even handed in the way it reproduces recordings. Where as the Ember can sound quite different with different tubes. When I found the most balanced sound from my Ember via the 6SN7GTB I also found it to be closest to the Polaris in its sonic signature. It kind of shows you how clever our golden eared designers are! I do prefer the euphonic sound of the Ember II (with the right tube) to the Polaris. It may be a coloration but it just seems more natural. I notice it mostly in vocals and a slight sweetening of the sound overall.

Yes my 6n6p tube is more neutral than the bass heavy/forward midrange tubes I mentioned. It is closer to the Ember with the 6SN7GTB (or the Polaris).

Yes my 6n6p tube is more neutral than the bass heavy/forward midrange tubes I mentioned. It is closer to the Ember with the 6SN7GTB (or the Polaris). My preferences of amp tube largely depend on what's in my dac. I have a tube dac and can color the sound twice, so I need to go for complementary tubes. I have a 6N2P-EV tube in the dac right now which brings out bonkers soundstage but has too much treble for my liking, so rolling in a tube like an RCA 6SN7GT Smoked Glass is better to my ears than the 6N6P I usually prefer. It's fun having two tube buffers to play with and lets me get good things from multiple tube types (like the smooth delivery of the RCA--which has more overall impact on the sound--and the soundstage of the 6N2P). I find I generally prefer a pretty pedestrian GE Triple Mica 5670 tube in the dac and 6N6P tube in the amp. No fatigue, great for long listening sessions at work.

Looks like development has stopped or slowed way down on power supply, headphone filters, home page blog has not been updated since Nov of last year, what is the status of these products, anyone?

Looks like development has stopped or slowed way down on power supply, headphone filters, home page blog has not been updated since Nov of last year, what is the status of these products, anyone? Things are still rocking and rolling - The site is updated often (1-2 times a month) but I have not been on the blog section much so yeah - old date. Power supply chassis are in design at the cnc shop. They ran into a multi-week now month nightmare making more Polaris and Ember CNC chassis that put a hold on work on the power supply chassis (anodizer ruined a huge lot of CNC chassis which has caused re-work, and lots of back and forth trips) The linear production PCB's are here ready to roll once the chassis are done Feel free to email anytime, I am always around and checking email night and day - working my tail off making sure everyone is taken care of

Hmmm, interesting, power supplies are a big factor in getting the best sound. I was stoked though to see the "Mean Well" brand on the stock power supplies, they are a top of the line power supply manufacturer. Good to hear you are busy J!

Looks like it. Zooming in the only legible wording I can make out is the heading 'Linear power supply development'.
The Kameleon 2 desktop has a linear PSU but not sure how similar it is to the upcoming Garage 1217 one in terms or power / design etc. Quite a weighty little critter though. Smells a bit funny too.

Have you been sniffing power supplies, Mark? You dirty beast.
It's possibly because the guts are new and are heating up/getting cooked so that eventually, the smell goes when it's settled.
It would have been nice to have had an EU distruibutor, Simon. No import tax and heavy post on top but it's not been possible. It amazes me that they get all the way here in one piece!!!

The K2D PSU I have here weighs a little over 900g without power cord. It's in quite a solid metal enclosure though. Have you been sniffing ppwer supplies. You dirty beast. It's possibly because the guts are new and are heating up/getting cooked so that eventually, the smell goes when it's settled. I gave up on the glue Ian. Kept getting my nose stuck to the tube I think the one I have here had seen some use but not sure how burnt in it is. The smell is there all the time and doesn't get stronger during use. It's not burning just an electrical / component-type smell but even sitting a couple of feet away I catch the odd whiff every now and then. It's not entirely unpleasant I have to say

Starting to work on it already. Don't think Jeremy is having enough time for this.
