On to Grados today.
I use these with BIG pads that fit around your ears since I find it a bit woolly with the flat foam pads and the bowls are OK, but hurt after a while. The big pads go around your ears so they feel like a full sized headphone tbh. There's also better imaging imo.
Same pads as the expensive grados. I first met them on Mick's PS1000 and I really liked that headphone quite a lot. In an attempt to emulate it, I changed the Grado pads on my own SR125i to the bigger ones. Not as good as Mick's but the spacial stuff is actually better and it's not as congested sounding as it can be with those horrible bowls.
The Ember smooths the Grados on 100 ohms out to be sure. Bearing in mind the variation in sound that you can obtain from a Grado with pads, my feeling is
Stock foam flats need 0.1 ohms out to clean it up a little. Some like the sound with the flats but my feeling is that it's a tad muddy but very comfortable. Lowering the impedance helps to make sure that it's a bit cleaner.
Bowls - I personally prefer 100 ohms output impedance to take the top edge down. However, for me, the bowls always sound so congested on loud passages and they can go very harsh.
Big Bowls - For me, the best option. Yes, it may lower the bass a fraction from the bowls perhaps, but you get more space and the sound is more 'airy'. The Ember sounds best at 100 ohms output again. It just calms that top edge down a fraction.
What has always surprised me with Grado headphones is just how much power they need to make them loud. I think they take more driving than many think and although they do work on little mini amps and bare ipods, you would be surprised you would be surprised how high the volume pot goes to get a good solid volume.
Anyway, Grados work well and you can even calm that top a bit with the 100 ohm setting.
