Thank you Frans. I appreciate all the info! I have the first Ember so Jeremy made me aware that the module wouldn't be an option when I PM'd him. An output attentuator cord sounds ideal and a little tube noise is something I can live with (or find a different tube) as long as I can listen with peace of mind. Using the low output R makes sense as med or high really wouldn't be suited to IEMs, based on what I'm hearing with the Ember (an output impedance > 1 ohm is less than ideal). I'd definitely be interested in buying one if the cords come to fruition. Heck, I'd even be willing to help crowd fund development if others were interested in ensuring it happens. Two's company, three's a crowd....so that just means 2 more of us right?

I ordered the external input attenuators 12 dB. Two people on another forum gave them good marks. The headphone is the new Paradox. I think it may have more to do with the 50 ohm impedance of the headphone than sensitivity. I'm using the 35 ohm output setting. Sounds very nice. Hopefully hiss will not be a problem. I am assuming Senns would not be an issue. Won't have to worry about IEM's. Never been a fan. I will report back on the results once they arrive. I'm interested in the attenuator chord. But first the HD650 filter and maybe one for the Paradox?
I am listening to them right now with a loaner Polaris from Jeremy that I am taking to this weekends Changfest meet in Southern California. All the settings are fantastic. I have it set so I have plenty of range on the volpot. Another nice pairing.

Don't be too bothered if Anaxilus isn't as chuffed about the Ember as some of us. He has very definite preferences and most gear doesn't do it for him.

Really, that should have lasers or flames shooting out of it If it was marketed the tag line could be "SOUNDS AS BEAUTIFUL AS IT LOOKS SCARY" I have to come here say thank you ronzon56. Just ordered the same thing from ebay. I learn this set up form musicman's avatar and he gave me the link to this thread. It looks fantastic lol:D.

I wanted the functionality of the new attenuation modules for my Mk1 Ember but the spacing on the pc board was not designed for a DIP socket. Instead, I kludged together my own socket from some 40 pin 2.54mm IC sockets. The socket: The spacing for the soldered-in resistors on the pc board matched the distance between 6 of the pins, so I clipped two 6 pin sections. I glued these two together, being really careful to align the pins in parallel, with a 0.60" thick piece of styrene plastic cut to size. Once the glue set I clipped all the interior pins and filed them down so that they would not make contact with the Ember's pc board, leaving only the four corner pins which would fit in the holes left by the resistors I removed. Once I was sure of a good fit (this took two or three tries) I soldered this socket into the board. The modules: The modules were easier because I now had lots of practice making the custom socket. These were made just as the original socket but I did not have to clip or file any pins as these would be inserted into the top of the socket and only the four outer pins would have electrical contact. Now I simply needed to bend, clip and insert matching pairs of resistors onto the modules. I made three - the original 20K, 33K, and 47.5 K. It really wasn't necessary to make three as I could have just pulled and inserted resistors in one if I wished, but this made changing values easier. Here are some quick shots. (nothing like macro lenses to remind you that it's time to dust the equipment ) Here is the attenuation module sitting in the socket. Note how the interior pins don't touch the pc board. Here are the other two modules. So - it can be done but it's tedious.

@ Frans / Jeremy. Whilst I'd ideally like an attenuator cable terminating in a 1/4" jack for the Ember I noticed a UK hifi store has this one in stock. Although not exactly cheap I wondered if it might tide me over until the Garage1217 cables are available to buy. It's set to -24db. Does it sound like it might be suitable for the Pandora (8 ohms / 105db) or would I really need something with a bit less attentuation than that? Thanks!

Gee Whiz, Jeremy maybe I should stay off the forums for awhile so you can catch up on orders! Welcome bbball when you ordered your Ember, did you order a 6sn7 adapter also? You did not say.
