Is anyone in a position to compare the Ember with the O2? I keep hearing my HD 650's will "come alive" with a valve amp and the Ember certainly gets a lot of love around here. I should point out that I am currently very happy with my O2 but of course I wonder if I'm maybe missing a trick. Also, the Ember looks fantastic!

I'm also happy with the O2 but the Ember sounds kind of more 'organic' and rich by comparison. The O2 seems 'correct' sounding and detailed but for me, just isn't as involving as the Ember, which has a rich fruity sound with bags of power to supply a great amount of headroom. It's a really big, mellow listen and definitely a tube lover's amp.

God, I'm tempted. I wish I could find something in the UK though. I don't like tax.

Yeah, I'll buy something eventually. I need to find some work first though I'm afraid. Things are tight at the moment.
Plus, depending on the outcome of the referendum I might be living in Spain soon, which is another expense to think about.

At one point in time the Ember (and Starlight) will return to me from the Viking-tour. If you want you can try it yourself but the return shipping fee (or forward shippingfee) would be yours. I will contact Claus one of these days and ask him if it is still on tour.

That's a very nice offer my friend. I think I'd like to take it up but I'd prefer to get my personal finances sorted first if you don't mind. Right now I simply can't afford to fall in love with valves

No worries.
I still have to get it back from the Vikings anyway.

Hello Everyone. New to this site. I received my Project Ember last evening, read the manual and started my journey.
I have had tube HP amps over the years (ASL MG Head OTL, Ming Da MC34B) but recently acquired a Lyr and pair of HE500 HPS. I've had some experience with tube rolling and have amassed quite a few tubes over the years. Did my research and decided to try the Ember with the SC option and have ordered a 12BH7A tube to try out.
My source is an OppoDigital 105 and I have HiRes files and disks (USB, SACD, DVDAudio, FLAC and BluRay music) I listen to. I listen to Jazz, Classic Rock and Orchestral. Last night I settled in on the bypass capacitor, low gain and low resistance settings for my HE500 phones. I immediately started tube rolling with a few of my Lyr 6v tubes but found a NOS Telefunken 12AT7 (March 1962) from my old VTL amps and that one seems to be the best so far. I'm still in the burn in process but will be testing quite a few tubes (and jumper settings) over the next several months. From Bugle Boys, Siemens, GE, Phillips, Voshkod, etc. Mostly NOS from 60's and 70's.
So far, I like the sound. Great soundstage and frequency response. I have 2 other sets of phones, Grado HP2 and Senn 600's to listen to as well.
I'm sure I will have quite a few questions about this amp and will share my experiences of my listening sessions.

Hi Mike and welcome to DIYAH. I'm just a 'normal' member like you, but one of the older ones in both senses of the word, and I'm sure one of the big 3 will be along soon to make your welcome official . I don't have an Ember myself having invested in an HA10 some time previously, and I recently also invested in a Kameleon so how many HP amps does one guy need:) . Reading your introductory post suggests to me that you will be very welcome here - all new members are, that's one of the attractions for me - but the gist of your resume' indicates to me that you'll find many similar minded guys on here. Welcome again and I hope you enjoy your stay. Dave.

Hi Mike,
Welcome to DIYAH. I was using mostly XCans in different guises (V1, V2 and V8) however, since getting the Ember, Ive used nothing else in all honesty. It's a really nifty amp and has a load of power as well. It drives headphones with ease and you get a lovely rich tube sound.
I use hd600 and Hd650 with it as well. I also use the k612, DT990, sr125i, DT770, T40 and T50 along with many others. Nothing seems a poor match with it since you can tweak away with impedance a and tubes so easily!!

Thanks Dave and Ian.
I have been playing with the different output resistance settings hooked up to my HD600s. Makes a big difference with the settings. The Senns haven't sounded this good in years. I can't believe this amp doesn't have a bigger PR presence. Seems to be great value for the $$. I might even try my barely used AKG 702s. Haven't found an amp yet that they sounded any good with.
It's time to do some serious listening. Just received my 12BH7 EH Gold tube but hard to remove the NOS Tele at this point. Still burning in the amp.

With the K712, try high output impedance. It slightly calms the top end down. That's the setting I use for the k612. Many amps just don't offer enough power in order to be able to do this.

Welcome to the forum Mike !
Chances are the K702 plays best from high output R setting (120 Ohm) Just experiment with the amp's settings.
The HD600 (and HD650) are todays most underrated headphones (with all the expensive headphones out there nowadays) and when fed with high quality recordings they really shine !
