I had to do a reinstall on my laptop today. Windows 10, because it had slowed to a point where it was unusable.
So the install went fine ..... except for one thing. No touchpad.
Worse, the touchpad isn't listed in device drivers.
I installed an Elantech driver.... still no sign of it in the device manager.
I have a USB mouse working but as soon as I disconnect, there is nothing.
Have I done something daft here?
(Don't say ..... 'yeah, you have a pc'!!!

First thing would be trying to find it in the manufacturer's support page.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using proboards

I did, Javier and downloaded a touchpad driver, but it doesn't show up in my device manager. The USB mouse is fine though.
I had a thought .... I originally had the manufacturer's version of Windows installed but the replacement was a Windows replacement, so all the original bloatware isn't there now. When I installed it, the mouse was plugged in so I'm guessing that Windows saw it and installed the USB driver not the touchpad driver.
I might need to take off the USB driver and install the touchpad first perhaps. Then but the USB driver back. Don't think I'll bother though!!
Anyway, it's going much faster now so not too bad.

This is why I wish I would stop buying Windows machines. About once a year I have to do a clean re-install. Our desktop is so slow it takes 30 minutes to download email. Time to update machines. Mac??? Good luck Ian.

Mac??? Good luck Ian. Yup, 4 year old Mac mini here running absolutely fine, all up to date & smooth. Sadly that's why I'm unable to contribute anything useful in threads such as this. I did once have a similar problem fith an old Windows Vista laptop and ended up using 3rd party software for the trackpad. I'm sure it was free but I can't remember the name of it. Edit - Synaptics was the name. Synaptics

Work and price are the reasons I have been trapped in Windows hell. Their Word has always been a pain. Frequently correcting what you don't want changed. Excel has a steep learning curve. PowerPoint is great, but really is a lot of work to make a basic presentation. Seems they should be better at this point. But I was truly hoping that Windows 10 would kill off the classic slow down problem. Too bad it seems to have not yet.
I still love computers!

Now that I have a clean install without the bloatware that seems to be preinstalled on computers, it is going like a rocket. 30 seconds to boot up from off, which is really good.
It had slowed to virtually not working and I have no idea what was holding it up. A reinstall of W10 isn't hard to do Ron. It even lets you keep your documents folder intact, so your data isn't deleted. It's just the thought of it I guess.
It's just my trackpad problem which I think was caused by me having the USB mouse plugged in while it installed. I put on a third party driver, but it isn't being recognised in spite of saying that it installed fine. Doesn't get a mention in the device manager!! Oh well .....

Having the USB mouse connected should not stop the system from detecting the touchpad. If you want me to have a look send me a PM or, even better, an email when you have some time available.

Thanks Javier. For now, I think I'll just go on with the mouse, but it is an odd thing with a new Windows install.

I'd seen that Gordon, but nothing kicks it into life. There is a hotkey to switch the pad on and off but that doesn't work and touchpad doesn't appear in my devices for some reason. Quite odd since it was just a clean install of Windows 10.
No biggie. Just use an external mouse....

It's a cheap Acer Gordon. That's why I wasn't too worried about a reinstall really. I did look on the Acer site and it could be something to do with the bios. I have an external driver installed and it shows on Regedit but no value set. It installed fine so I think it's some kind of Windows 10 update problem that on the original Acer version updated just fine, but a straight install causes this problem!! Might be an excuse to go and buy something decent ..... (while I'm out buying an msr7) Computer works perfectly except for that one issue and I suspect that I should have used the Acer reinstall, but didn't want all the crap that gets installed with it. One of the problems with these preinstalled computers is that it may be a slightly altered version of Windows for their computer with fixes and the rubbish that they put on, always directing you to their own company download site. Acer puts loads of nonsense on theirs. It's all gone now though. At least the laptop is actually lightening fast now!

Acer are no worse than any other supplier of Windows-based machines in this respect. Just one of the reasons I switched to a Mac. Have you got any other Audio devices installed on the machine because I know they can cause lots of problems re: USB drivers? Yes, I'm looking at you, Novation.

In the last 2 weeks I've upgraded two Macs, a Macbook Pro and a 21.5" iMac both from 2012. They had become ridiculously slow to boot an open apps (>3 min in case of the iMac). I replaced the original shitty HDDs (5.4Krpm crap) with Samsung EVO 850 500GB SSDs and also doubled RAM from 8 to 16GB, now they boot (<30") and open apps at a reasonable pace but not as quick as a proper Windows 10 desktop PC, not even close. Macs are not magical, their performance deteriorates with time as any other computer. But horses for courses.
