I asked Superlux if these headphones have undergone changes since they sent me prototypes.
No idea if and when I get an answer.

The description on their site is somewhat weird HD687 Very suitable for classic music appreciation HD688 Excellent sound quality Maybe the stock HD687 is still tuned to be thinner in the bass performance.

Superlux answered and said the HD688 is the same as the prototype and will be launched in a month or so. No answer about the HD687 but asked them again.

My initial thought was "why didn't they make changes based on your recommendations?" but as long as the sound quality is as good as the prototype, for 60€, i'd rather make the changes myself after you get and measure the production model.

I now have received the HD687 from Thomann and did Solderdudes modifications (well except the Ebay pads, I use the stock velours pads from the 662Evo since my 687 does only come with pleather pads).
I am a bit dissapointed, especially after seeing the very linear plots in Solderdudes excellent guide and measurements (thanks a lot!). Especially when compared to the modded 662 Evo, the modded 687 sounds recessed in the midtones. The bass has a lot of distortion and sounds "fat". Jazz is almost unpleasant to listen to because it emphasizes the bass there a lot.
I really wonder if they have changed anything in the production model. I noticed for example a hole beneath the driver that directly goes through the disk where the driver is mounted and into the foam on the backside that does not seem to be there in the pre-production model. Would be interesting if Solderdude would test the production model and see if there are any changes (because that would make the modification guide quite obsolete).
I am also wondering since some are talking about the 688 how it compares to the 662 Evo.
Best, Hirsch2k

Sound more like the 681 Evo, you can also try to see what solderdude did on them for balancing the bass.

The EVO pads will make them sound very boomy and fat so will any of the other Superlux pads To lower the bass you need either the e-bay pads or have to use SRH1840 pads. All the mods need to be done. The problem with the e-bay pads (Wang Yifei) is that they may have changed production of these so really cannot guarantee proper results. Best option may be the SRH1840 pads or the cheap, but less comfy, HIFIMAN velourspads Don't use the original pads once mods have been performed to the driver. When the HD687 arrived did it sound all 'midrangy' ?

I'm glad I see finally their release. Unfortunately same cheap shell. I believe they'll soon be in the 40 euros range. I'd like to see eventually some final FR measurement of the actual products. If nothing in the tuning changed, perhaps the 688 would be a better choice...

To me the HD688 is much more interesting and easier to modify. I know they did not change the HD688 but they never answerred whether the HD687 was changed in some way.
Pricing of Superlux headphones usually is pretty constant.
60 Euros for the HD688 would not be too much. Too bad the mechanics of the headphone weren't changed.

When the HD687 arrived did it sound all 'midrangy' ? Hm, not really. I was noticing a distinct treble peak. I would say, they sounded like a more linear version of the 681 but not quite there. Modded them quite quickly. I asked Thomann about the HD688 and they told me, they are available Mid-End January and confirmed they will be in the 60€ range too. edit: They are already available and ship 5th January. I ordered a pair and will post pictures. I ordered these ebay-Pads: r.ebay.com/nM5VJnI don´t know if these are the correct ones.. But as far as I understand the ebay pads have to be velours? Edit: Totally forgot: the production model does not have a felt disc, only a very thin cloth built into the pads (plus the Velours pads are not included. Pic of the covered hole beneath the driver

plus the Velours pads are not included. It's strange that on 687's page they say "velvet ear pads" and if you search between Superlux products they say "synthetic leather ear pads". Anyway, there is no additional "and 1 pair of velour pads". Maybe Superlux do that because now Thomann sell the pads as well.

The difficult thing about the needed pads is that they must NOT be similar to the Superlux velourpads.
The e-bay pads I have hear are far more 'leaky' in the bass. Trouble is I have no idea what pads are leaky and which are not. This is impossible to see from the outside, let alone from pictures.
The ones I bought were from a seller named 'Wang Yifei' but he doesn't exist on e-bay any more. So don't know who is selling which type of pads these days.
The HD688 works great with stock Superlux velourpads and when ordering the HD688 would recommend to order those pads along with it. These are very cheap from Thomann.
Anyway, when the bass becomes much less than with the stock pads it will be O.K. When bass remains bloated and boomy you need other pads. SRH1840 pads will work fine (also from Thomann), these are more 'leaky' than 940 pads.
