I'm a member of another forum and it has additional symbols, friendly/supportive, funny, informative/useful, like, agree, thanks, craftmanship/clever.
As you run the mouse pointer over each one it lets you know the meaning of the symbol.
I take Ian's point and disappointment that more people don't add to the topics, maybe if they were added people who feel have nothing they can add, can at least join in with one of these remarks?

I obviously can't speak for the others but in my case, it's just summer in Minnesota, which means we have a short time to get a whole lot of outdoor activities in. Haying season ruled my life for a bit, as will the late summer/early fall grounds prep. The fact that the factory has been working lots of overtime hasn't helped. Once winter rears its ugly head, I'll hibernate by the computer more.
That being said, little symbols or emoticons might be helpful for giving a quick acknowledgement when one doesn't have time to type out a full reply.

I'm not sure how to access them on this software Syd. I'll have a look. It makes me feel as though people mostly just want to read what someone else says, I think possibly because most people don't have the same amount of gear that we have and aren't really too bothered about writing about something that they don't have? It puzzles me too because I actually think that were a lot easier on here than most other Audio places where one word off topic gets a telling off or someone starts up a row about inconsequential things. As far as aggressive replies goes, we've had very little and what has appeared has been fixed pretty quickly so that it doesn't continue. It seems to me that there are two kinds of general Hi-Fi forums...... one where they get so technical and up themselves that it verges on snobbery and one upmanship and others where it's a free for all for kids. I wanted something in between which is friendly and informative tbh. Maybe these discussion forums have become outmoded by things like 'Facebook' or something? The thing is, the more people that write something about their own gear, the more others might join in since they might have the gear that others are talking about. I don't know the answer really. It's always an uphill struggle with relatively new places like this and really, any forum is only as good as its members really. Being older, I guess we all have our gear and aren't really looking around for the next 'fix' like younger people and most aren't as 'anal' about sound as me maybe? It is a difficult one but would make the place so much nicer for everyone if the 300+ daily visitors took the leap to write something. I often feel as though I'm talking to myself tbh!!!! We should all meet n a central pub in U.K. one day for a 'Board Meeting'!!!! There you are ..... an emoticon!!!

I think you're on to something, Ian. Perhaps many of us are pretty satisfied with our current set-up, so there's not a whole lot to add on many of the topics. I know I'm mostly done gear shopping (with the possible exception of a Kameleon in the future!) so I often feel I don't have much to add to many of the gear topics. I'm also not about to attempt teaching the rest of you all my "superior" audio secrets, as that would be a complete farce.
There are plenty of other armchair experts out there.

I would love to meet up for a pint. If they could invent a Star Trek transporter. I agree with much of what has been said. I think we are a small (and somewhat more "experienced" group. I too am a member of another forum and we are experiencing some issues as we have grown much larger than when we started. I would hate to have any of that start here.) Personally, a few more posts from people with our laid back attitude would be welcome. We certainly don't claim to know everything or even claim to have golden ears. But if one wanted to learn the basics or ask some technical questions, especially on the digital end of things (much thanks to Frans and Javier) this is the place. Or the website at diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com. I really like the fact that we can chat about audio, or the weather or picnics, vacations etc. without as they say people getting their underwear in a bunch. Also the weather is nice and I have noticed things naturally slow down. As to the additional symbols we should be cautious. Dislikes or other negative symbols invite trouble. Certainly has caused issues elsewhere. Perhaps we could focus on not just what are you listening too, but add some comments on why we like it. Or what release of older albums we prefer and why. It would certainly help me in not purchasing re-mastered CD's and downloads that are worse. Has anyone here tried to improve the sound of a botched re-master with say Adobe Audition? Perhaps some folks would be interested in getting into measuring headphones instead of leaving all the work for Frans. Just thinking aloud. Or out of my arse with to much coffee! Only 12:30 pm here. Cheers to a nice weekend.

I would love to meet up for a pint. If they could invent a Star Trek transporter. Entirely possible if you believe quantum mechanics theory. And maybe sooner than we think at least at the subatomic scale. We could probably get Frans to come up with something. I wouldn't mind bailing out of this hurricane weather!

Back on subject though I just haven't listened to headphones much during the summer. It is just too hot here to stick insulation on your ears. I'll wait till it cools down.
I also had some issue with signing in with the new Proboards (didn't recognize my password) and never took time to deal with it. So I just lurked as a guest until this storm gave me time to take care of loose ends. Sorry about that. Most of the recent headphone topics I had never owned/used anyway so had little to add. I try to go by the idiom "better to be silent and thought a fool than speak out and remove all doubt. Don't always succeed though.

I think you make a really valid point Heater ..... people afraid to make a fool of themselves.
That really is a big issue on some boards with some tech knowalls who seem to get a kick from punching others down with their supposedly superior knowledge. There has been a tiny amount of that going on here but it soon got knobbled so it very rarely happens. It doesn't stop that fear though.
So I understand that viewpoint although I know that everyone who writes gets a welcome from our members.
I've seen the kind of things you're talking about as well Ron. The atmosphere can get quite horrible there and they describe anything regarded as 'off topic' as noise.
I'd rather see a bit of 'noise' if it gets people talking tbh. Trouble is that new people seem very reticent to write in spite of Mark, for instance, doing his most to post at one point to help that happen. I think even he got tired of talking to himself or me!!
It also seems that fotm is the thing that gets contributions more than anything else. That showed with my videos and numbers that watched. The new iem's got way more views on YouTube than anything else that I did. (Trinity Audio iem's) Others didn't attract anything like the interest.
So I guess we need some manufacturers to send out samples or something for us to discuss and pass around, which would attract the fotm fans!!.
The more people that write, then the more bits of gear could be discussed but as Heater says..... many lack the confidence to write.

I do very much appreciate the effort you make to respond to all members posts. I'm sure most people here understand that you try to make folks welcome. BTW Do you ever sleep!

I couldn't agree more about negativity, the symbols I mentioned were all positives. I'm thinking of those posts which don't really need a reply but it's nice to acknowledge that the post has been read. I suppose I must now admit the other forum I follow is for railway modellers (don't see an 'embarrassed' emoticon here!)it's a UK one with a massive following, some threads running to thousands and these are the symbols used: running the mouse pointer over them shows what each means - like, agree, thanks, informative/useful, funny, friendly/supportive. I know there are members here, myself included, who don't exactly flood the place with posts, but it gives the opportunity to leave a quick recognition to those who do. Just let's them see that others have appreciated their post. It's all self explanatory but say Frans posts one of his many technical documents, a quick i click shows appreciation, even if you can add nothing to it, or it's self explanatory. On that other forum I have found even quite old articles that have been very useful to me and I can still leave a thanks or useful symbol. The person who gets the the i or whatever gets a notification, however much time has passed, that someone is still getting value from something that he made the effort to post however ago. I guess a lot of the unregistered users are attracted in to read the very useful technical and opinions/reviews of particular designs or whatever. That was how I found RG, which was great at a point. I must try and start posting a few things, I literally don't get out much as following a serious RTC in '96 in Scotland my wife got a bad spine or muscle injury (the medical authorities have no answer), I think I mentioned this before, that has got progressively worse to the extent that we can't go on holiday, as she can't sit for long before going into severe muscle spasm. Car journeys beyond twenty or thirty minutes trigger bad pain, even our twice-yearly trips to London have come to an end. So it limits social things to talk about on here. I still log on several imes a day to pick up on Marvetone, Ian, Derek etc etc bringing us up to date on little stories.
