I figured you would buy a 2nd hand HD600. I did consider it but current 2nd hand prices are the same as the one offered by shops for some reason. I will see how this goes

You can't go wrong with a HD600 and some EQ. It is a bit bass shy and reacts well to EQ. I don't recommend to 'modify' them. Sennheiser knew what they were doing when designing it.

Some agree with him, some don't (esp. MDR Z1R owners?) but I don't think many doubt Tyll's passion for this hobby.
Poor bloke. He gets more and more despondent as things go and towards the end he almost looks like the devoted husband who gets home to discover that the love of his life has packed her bags, cleared out their life savings and eloped with his brother!!
But as always a good listen and it helped me (along with impressions elsewhere) decide upon a pair of HD6XX over these. My wallet thanks him. Sennheiser's marketing dept probably doesn't.

Heard them briefly in a shop - not the greatest rig or environ, but won't be trading in my 650s - the grain/glare in the upper midrange was apparent. Agree with Tyll...this is not continuing the legend - it's the end of it. Oh well...pretty good 20+ year run from the 580/600/650 family.

Has anyone discovered any worthwhile 660S mods?

Well you can use the passive inline filter designed for the hdtix. It shaves off some of the bite in the treble. Smoothes the treble a bit. The 2 guys I know that tried it did like the (subtle) effect.
