I own the k702 and the k712 and I like them both very much. I also enjoy the k702 with the k712-earpads. And like Jackcy describes on page 2, I also find that combination varmer and more bassy than the k712. So I am a bit surprised to see the measurement of this setup on the k712 review (https://diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com/headphones/measurements/akg/k712/). The measurement suggests that the k702 with k712-pads would sound somewhat clearer than the k712. But that is not the case. It sounds varmer. From the experience of it, I imagined it would be lower around 2kHz and more flat, like the k702 with the original pads only lowered overall with 3db or something like that. Has anyone wondered about this too? It may depend on which pads are fitted on the K712, angled or non-angled.

The k712 is fitted with standard pads. (Non-angled memoryfoam) I have an ekstra set of k712-pads that I put on my k702.

Looking at the measurements of a bassport modded k702, showing added distortion below 100hz, may be a bit of a disappointment to some. Of course Akg know what they are doing with this design. The k702 is made for mixing in a studio. The low bass and strong treble in the k702 will make the studio engineer add some more bass to the mix and tone down at 2kHz and other higher frequencies. The result will probably be quite good I imagine, with a smooth sound and some powerfull bass. But I do not use the k702 for mixing purposes. I use it only for listening to music at home and that is all. For this purpose the bassport mod is a must for me. I love the extra attention around 2kHz in the k702 and k712. This is a matter of taste. To me the extra bass with the mod balances the sound to near perfection. A balanced frequency response is more important to me than distortion in the bass area. I is a compromise by choice, and don't forget the low price on the akg... nobody is perfect ;-)

By the way, if you like the bassport modded akg but don't want to compromise, do like me, get the Stax 3170 and/or 4170, I have both. The Stax will do everything the akg do, only with a smoother not so aggressive treble and a little more bass and no distortion.
So why do I have the akg when I have the Stax? Answer: For fun ;-)

True :-) Also it is a bit of a sport to find a cheaper headphone that performs well ;-) Edit: Actually the "comfort" you mention is a major thing to me. The akg is a bit lighter(the cable certainly is), it has soft velour earpads(especially k712) and does not get warm at all. These things are essential to me when watching movies and makes the akg the better choice for long sessions.

Also true. The akg actually responds really well to an equalizer. It has just been more fun to find a mod that does the trick ;-) This mod is not perfect, but I still like it. It has been a journey to reach a place where I can say: I like this headphone, even though it is not perfect. It turned my attention away from detail towards the music ;-)

Greetings,
My first unit developped two strange bumps, or what I call boils, on the left pad. Despite trying to wear them, it was still putting pressure and causing discomfort. The right ear cup also had quite several moving parts that were making very audible noises with the slightest movement. The soundstage was also disappointing. Actually, the box was suspicious despite everything inside looking new.
Consequently, I returned the first unit and ordered again. Almost no moving parts noises and the velour pads does not have developped boils (not yet at least). The sound seems slighty more qualitative and the soundstage feels better (and now indeed impressive, but why and how?). However now, the thin transparent plastic that guides the headband is cracking each time I put the headphones on my head. It does not when I pull it out nor when I move my head. Sadly, I fear it will break in no time. I would be quite disappointed considering how I invested, really like them and treat my stuff, mostly headphones, carefully. I don't know if I prevently return them or not.
People who use/have used the AKG K7** series, what is your opinion on the build quality and design of the headband system ? Is it worth trying to order them again ?

In my experience the elastic bands that do the 'auto height adjustment' lose their elasticity over time.

I am personally more worried about my left transparent plastic clipping each time I put the headphones on my head. I am afraid it will break.

With older versions and Superlux models (which copied the K240 headband design) the headband itself had a slit in it. It broke of there as well. The newer models look better but perhaps AKG should have opted for a better material for this part.
Maybe add some lubricant that does not affect the plastic ?

Oh I didn't know these small fixes over the time. I tested the unit to be returned, and it made some low cracking noises, but it feels normal, as if you were stretching something (which it actually does). My new one is rather silent except for this very (al)one and loud clipping. I actually struggle to understand if it is the mechanism (hitting something or else) or rather the plastic being put under too much pressure. If it is a mechanical problem I could indeed try a lubricant... __________ edit 06/10/22: After carefully treating my K702 unit, the clipping noise is gone. However, both plastic now have a little crack at the same location. I suppose the plastic took the mold/shape somehow and the cracks are the consequence of this. I think it will be the first part that will fail but not after several years. Overall, the whole build quality is pretty good, better than I thought, the main problem being that there is a lot of moving parts. It feels like it can quickly fall aparts, but it actually holds well.
