I totally live for marketing BS and shameless gimmickry. Heck if it was still the late 70s/early 80s I'd be making my purchases on the number of knobs and switches the device has.
I have drank the Sony kool-aid, so DSD support is a selling point and why I'm not looking at Schiit. I hope to get one of those Oppo players so I can start ripping my Classical SACDs eventually (granted I got into SACD as much for multichannel as SQ - and yes I know headphones aren't multichannel)

Oh...shameless gimmickry. Would you like to buy a set of SACD 'purifiers'? Removes unwanted impurities through the applied mojoroonia in a special blend of bit perfect BS. $1400/pair. My BS gimmicks don't come cheap. ;-)

So, to prove I'm not a completely gullible rube, I just ordered a "like new" Topping D30. I can live with 24/192, DSD128. At least I know from the Daphile thread that the D30 should work without issue.
Also to prove that I haven't completely lost my insanity - I can still roll opamps on it!! (a serious question… is it really worth rolling opamps? Those Bursons pop up on Massdrop fairly often)
Finally, can anybody recommend a good, decently priced optical cable that has a 3.5mm end? My laptop has a 3.5mm optical out and I can't imagine using those cheap-ass plastic adapters (I already have one) are doing anybody any good.

at ASR Amir rolled some opamps in the D10 (similar circuit) Not worth exploring as the opamps are just output buffers with 100% feedback so cannot impart a 'sound'. I would recommend to use the optical input as the Toppings somethimes are plagued by groundloops (USB and SPDIF RCA in)

Good glass cables (like good vintage thermionic glass) are all indecently priced. Among the best are the Lifatec - just $99USD for 20" cable. $72 for B-stock tho. Or these closeout glass cables are a better value at $22USD for 3ft. Now...about that 3.5mm adapter... have you heard about USB? ;-)

I initially bought that 3.5mm adapter just so I could connect my mini-disc directly to my cd player - instead of having to rip to PC first (ahh, good ol mini-disc.)
Those cables in your second link probably would be good if they only had a 3.5mm end. Those Lifatecs actually would cost more than I'm paying for the DAC

More than the DAC? That's perfect. Probably get several in various lengths, then skip the cheap opamp rolling and move right to spending thousands on cable rolling. Don't under-spend on DAC to Amp cables either. Ask Frans, but the best sounding electrons expect to be skin-effected in gold or silver.

And if you want to impress us with more CC debt, Amazon has a 3.5mm glass optical cable for just $600CDN. That's getting close to transferring in style all those delicate bits to your sub $100 DAC.

Jeez. I'm not sure if I even want to ask for recommendations for a 3.5mm coax cable for my X3 now

Yes, on audio boards you always want to be careful what you ask for. ;-)

No problem in using plastic fiber for everything below 96/24. The Topping has proper de-jitter circuitery.

Yes, on audio boards you always want to be careful what you ask for. ;-) I hear that. I'm stunned at what some people recommend as "decently priced" tubes No problem in using plastic fiber for everything below 96/24. The Topping has proper de-jitter circuitery. Thanks Frans. That makes things simpler.
