These 2 headphones differ a lot. The HE4XX is 'lusher' and easy to EQ. The HD58X is 'tighter' and 'fresher' as in less lush but less bass extension. Comfort differs as well. I'd say both are good entry level headphones with different qualities. I have extended the pdf with lots more measurements and experiments with the HD58X. Those who like to know a bit more (especially those with a technical mind) about the HD58X might want to have a look at THIS PDF

So long as I can pay under $200 for the HE 58X but... maybe I should just bite the bullet and order it now... as I'm sure I'll find another HE 4XX without to much fuss Welp I bit, 6 months from now here's to hoping the HE 4XX will be on sale again! Heck I might even take things a step further and see if I can get some wood Cups made for the HE 58X for kicks and giggles, doubt it would change the sound to much so long as I kept the same grills... but the aesthetics would be gorgeous! I was planning to do that with an HD 600 as well but no reason to at this point I think

Will be a few weeks ... Turns out it wasn't public info yet. They just forgot to notify me about this.

Well the tight headclamp was solved easily... Massdrop forgot to mention that the headphone they sent (without any prior notification I was about to receive it) is another pre-production model and, obviously, I was the first one to receive one of the few test samples.
I thought the drop had taken place... but it did not... turned out later, it was just an evaluation sample of the new iteration and was not meant for publication (yet)
Ah well ... some peeps got a glimpse of what will most likely be shipped and it gives me time to rewrite the article.

Have to say I was intrigued by the term "$150 Utopia killer" in the original post....just a shame very few people got to see it ;-)
(ordered 10 for eBay...these will be like gold dust come release)

What's the word on Ye Olde HD580s say compared to the 600/650 (or in general). Asking because I found a post offering to trade a pair for Grados.

HD580 (old) = HD600 with a different (plastic) grille. Can be swapped for HD650 grille though.

To end the speculation. I simply jumped the gun thinking the drop had taken place when I received the production model of the HD58X. Unfortunately I was not informed that I could not publish anything about it yet. What I can say though is that the 'mystery plot' that is out there (Head-fi, Reddit and on Massdrop comments page) is the measurement plot of the actual HD58X production model and the graph is accurate (that is, when you find my plots to be accurate). As that plot is out there anyway I will treat you on the FR of the production HD58X ( Left, Right) ... Now there is channel matching for ya... but... I will have to hold out on all the other good stuf about this piece of German engineering. The HD58X Jubilee's are already in full production by the way and are the same as the one shown above. Watch the Massdrop site for publication about this. When their cat is out of the bag (may still take a while) my findings will be posted here as well as a more elaborate article in pdf with some interesting modifications for those that seek HD600 type of balance.

Thanks for the update, Frans!
That graph looks really, really good. Best $150 headphone?
In my experience as full-time feline staffer, cats don't like to stay in the bag very long. Cats, like information, just want to be free. And well-fed. And pampered.

Quite easy to modify to be one of the best <$150 headphones.
That cat still finds the bag warm and comfy though. They are creatures of habit after all.

I read that as "... modify to be one of the best <$1500 headphones." - It's my cheapskate imagination. ;-)
