i did not have "run with high process priority" ticked in the aiso settings. maybe that is why? appears ok now. should i also tick the "use 64bit aiso drivers" box?

Glad you got it sorted out Simon though changing process priority shouldn't have fixed anything, strange indeed. If your Windows is 64 bit then yes, check 64bit drivers.

Is there any difference between JRiver, Foobar and iTunes (Windows) in terms of sound quality? This question is aimed only at scientific answers. Not subjective sighted tests.

If all three players are configured the same they will sound the same. However, JRiver and Foobar allow for much more than iTunes (and do not install so much intrusive crap). ASIO and WASAPI exclusive output modes and different upsampling or upconverting modes available in JRiver and Foobar can make a measurable difference whereas iTunes AFAIK has no such functionalities.

If I don't use ASIO or Wasapi. Just direct? Why don't you try ASIO or Wasapi and see what you think? They're free and there is plenty of information on how to set them up. When I first tried them (in Windows) I noticed an improvement immediately and I have used ASIO ever since. I believe that WASAPI did sound the same however. \ If you do some research you can find scientific answers why they sound "better" (in Windows) and why they sound the same.

Do both ASIO and Wasapi sound identical?

Do both ASIO and Wasapi sound identical? I didn't do much of a comparison but to me they did. Also, I read that technically they should sound the same. I can't explain it, but, as I remember it was pretty easy to understand.

DirectSound and WASAPI non exclusive go through Windows Mixer and get resampled to whatever one has selected in the device configuration. WASAPI exclusive and ASIO bypass Windows Mixer and can provide higher than 192KHz PCM sample rates as well as DSD (native or DoP).

No, I'm the 'dummy' Simon. I have to wait for Javier's knowledge on this stuff. He's quite amazing with it!!!! Try HQ Player with the Ifi idsd. It's a 'delicious' and 'addictive' sound for sure. It's one sound that had me thinking about a full blown computer set up in the front room!!!!

i installed the sacd plug-in yesterday (0.8.4)
tried to follow the instructions on part 2 . problem is i cant get to the first two screenshots shown "preferences:sacd" !! my "components layout" just dont look the same. i can, however find the "aiso proxy" dialogue box , which i set to "pcm to dsd512"
thing is , yesterday when i did this , i was getting music playback but the led on my micro idsd was still green. should be magenta for dsd512! i did close and re-open the foobar program several times to see if that made a difference, but it didnt.
today i have changed nothing. i still cant find the "preferences:sacd" dialogue box.
the sound output logo on my windows taskbar now has a red circled cross on it.
BUT sound is still playing and the led on the micro is now magenta , as though it is receiving dsd512!! dont know what is going on
