Simon I'm not 100% on this but don't buy if you have a legit copy of W7. W10 upgrade from W7 was still active a few months ago when I rebuilt my neighbours W7 PC for my own use. I just used the PC case as it was smaller and much lighter than my own, new motherboard, power supply, memory, CPU, Solid State Drive, the only parts I used from my own computer were the DVD and a 1 TB hard drive. It's not generally known but there is a way to do the upgrade legally. I'll have a look and see if I can find the method again. AS long as you have the W7 legit Product Key to enter at activation, if not you might find a friend who has moved to a tablet and still got the old PC and Product Key. You only need the Key.

Okay Simon found the file with the instructions, You now need to get the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool. Head to the Windows 10 download page here is the link.............. www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10and select Download tool now. Once the file’s downloaded, open it and agree to the various terms and conditions that are required. Select Upgrade this PC now when given the choice. If you don’t have enough space on your hard disk, you might need to free up space and run the installation from a USB stick. I used a USB stick think you need 8GB The setup will guide you through this. Keep files or start afresh? You will be given the choice as to whether you want to keep your files and programs, or start afresh with none of your programs and files. The latter option is better for starting with a clean operating system, and if you backed up your files, you’ll be able to move the files and programs you need back on to your computer as and when you need them. But keeping everything is arguably simpler and avoids you running into possible issues if you’ve lost the licence keys for some of the software you’re running on Windows 7. Final steps Sit back and let the upgrade happen. This could take a few hours depending on the speed of your PC and internet connection. Your PC will restart itself a few times, but eventually you’ll see the welcome screen for Windows 10. You’ll need to make choices about some privacy arrangements and sign into your Microsoft account if you have one. I'd recommend getting a Microsoft account on your W7 PC before you start. Then search for ‘activation’ in the Start Menu and click on it to see whether your Windows 10 licence is activated. If your Windows isn’t activated, you’ll need to buy a licence but most likely it will activate if your W7 PC is legit and you have got a Microsoft account. This is when I entered my neighbours W7 product key and got activated. Best of luck hope it works for you. Alan

Alan does make a great point. It is still possible to do a free and legal upgrade from 7 to 10. Save yourself some money and go that route if possible.
As far as home vs. pro? Not too sure if it'll benefit you or not. If you're pretty computer savvy and like digging deep into the OS to configur access and stuff like that, then pro could be worthwhile. I bought a pro key myself, and I really don't use many of the extra features. Plus on top of that Microsoft removed a bunch of the feature and made them only available on enterprise now.

Simon if your W7 is home you can only upgrade to home, if you have Pro you can keep with that. I've used Home since day one can't see any advantage for you and I with Pro.

Alan this does sound like its worth a try. my W7 is indeed a legit version of "home premium". just need to find the box/key. i dont have a great deal of programs so will probably go for the fresh install. my music library i have copied on to my 2nd hard disk. my ssd is not huge but has little more than windows on it so plenty of room. i assume i must have an account with microsoft as i use office 365. i shall save this task for the weekend though. cheers Alan

most things so far seem pretty straight forward on 10. got foobar playing bit perfect easily. (impressed myself there).
my world would be a happy place if it was not for the email issue.

I managed to get it sorted through my isp. I do have one query though. in one of the windows "welcome" emails it says things like anti-virus are already included within the OS. does this mean ive wasted money on my Kaspersky renewal? cheers

OTOH is not as complete as its paid for rivals and it doesn't protect in as many ways but if one doesn't do foolish things it can be pretty good as a defense system.

Hi Simon I haven't paid for PC security in a long time. First off BT had a security package included with my broadband. (Okay you could say you were paying for it). Then W10 was rolled out including "Windows Defender" now called Windows Security, this is all I have relied on since W10 came out. You just have to be cautious about the sites and downloads you hit on. Since W10 and Windows Security are constantly being updated I reckon my PC is reasonably secure without paying for anything else. You might wish to read through this link. support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4013263/windows-10-stay-protected-with-windows-securityDo you really need Office 365? A really good free alternative is Open Office..... www.openoffice.org/I see Javier was posting as I was typing.
