Hello DIY Audio Heaven Community,
I own the HD 58X for one year now and those were my first audiophile cans.
I bought them bc of the hype, I may have pulled the trigger too fast.
Please suggest me additional headphone or headphone to replace my HD58X.
In order for you to understand my personal preferences in audio,
I will list some music and explain what I like (+) and dislike (-) with the HD58X.
You will read a lot of negatives, bc the HD58X simply doesn't suit me subjectively.
Note: I'm unfamiliar with music terms and my English isn't my primary language, but I will try my utmost best.
My setup:
Modded HD58X: Outer foam removed and felt applied, like solderdude.
Output: Fiio E10K as DAC/AMP, bass boost disabled.
Sources: YouTube.
Music with emphasis on instruments:
Violin: ( youtu.be/-SUvnM3nqfU | youtu.be/0jXXWBt5URw | www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALGz2FHpJWM )
-violin lacks detail and aggressiveness
Guitar acoustic: ( youtu.be/WXIVZ25vHJ4 | youtu.be/F2SJf1J-LHA | youtu.be/bGPo1Nm66Rw )
-guitar lacking in detail and sound colorized (too warm)
Metal: ( youtu.be/lRt54xjIq7w | youtu.be/7dxqXOe1pBo | youtu.be/c8lBaFz_PNU )
-e-guitars are too peaceful and drums are dull
Keyboard Instruments: ( youtu.be/zucBfXpCA6s | youtu.be/MQ8svM3S9t0 )
-the notes don't feel precise
Orchestra: ( youtu.be/rOjHhS5MtvA | youtu.be/YT_63UntRJE | youtu.be/nMLkrTJ9BZI )
-I feel claustrophobic, its like everybody is cramped into one- or two rows
-the perceived space sounds like a bathtub
also:
-bad separation, the instruments come in like a "wall of sound" and everything blends together
-clarity is lacking, too much reverb -> it can't keep up with the speed. In example: the guitar- and violin solos are too fast to handle
-everything is too dull and thick sounding
-bass is: not punchy, also boomy, slightly too much quantity
there are no positives, I absolutely don't like the HD58X on instruments.
Music with emphasis on vocals:
Pop: ( youtu.be/kUjKxtJd21E )
R&B: ( youtu.be/J3UjJ4wKLkg | youtu.be/qSIOp_K5GMw )
-singers are a little shouty
+female/male voices are detailed
+vocals sound angelic (like here: youtu.be/JieSNMVESnI )
HipHop: ( youtu.be/QsZlY0Vz4-o | youtu.be/AQm7wXe3qjo )
-the beat sounds weak, singers too loud
Rap: ( youtu.be/h4UqMyldS7Q )
+quantity and extension of bass
+super chill...
-maybe too smooth
also:
-the instruments... EVERYTHING in the background feels blended together (especially here: youtu.be/j7ujvOWWfpY )
-bass is muddy and low quality (maybe its the recording)
+bad quality recordings are smoothed out
The HD58X perform quite well here, the bass helps.
Music with emphasis on electronic:
Chill electric: ( youtu.be/_ScM9pKlCfo | youtu.be/WHJk4MUs8_4 | youtu.be/si9zsvCH8e4 )
Trap: ( youtu.be/c1Q4CwGkM98 | youtu.be/ntLop32pYd0 )
-too claustrophobic and dark
-thin texture, not enough layers of sound
-treble feels low quality
also:
+quantity & extension of bass helps a long way
That's the music I listen the most and I hope my comments are sufficient so far.
TLDR.:
negatives:
-sound stage (feels very claustrophobic)
-separation (wall of sound, instruments are blended in)
-bass quality (muddy, not punchy enough)
-bass quantity sometimes not done right (sound feels thick and not airy)
-clarity (too much reverb, notes are not precise, HD58X struggles with speed)
-lack of treble presence and quality (instruments not detailed and sound cheap)
-texture (lack of layers of sound, very simple sounding, technically bad)
-vocals are too loud (shouty singers, therefore background is too recessed)
-overall dull & underwhelming sounding
positives:
+bad recordings are enjoyable, due to lack of clarity and sound signature of Sennheiser
+no fatigue, could listen for 10 hours -very comfortable
& light headphones
+bass quantity, sometimes a tad too much, depends on music tho
+vocals sound detailed and angelic
My max. budget is 400 dollar.
I did a little research and I believe the DT 1990 (370$ used) would fit my needs.
DT 1990 in comparison to HD58X:
+analytical, more details, instead of everything smoothed out
+sound stage feels wider, less claustrophobic
+improved instrument separation & imaging, even with wider perceived sound stage
+less bass quantity for less thickness and more air, but still enough for enjoyment
+high bass quality, also punchy
+high treble quality
+mids not shouty, so background gets more attention
-8k peak, I will test that out first and then may get a passive filter by solderdude!
-due to beyer typical v-shape sound signature: recessed mids??? how does it compare to HD58X in terms of vocals??
-Fiio E10K will drive them, but I'm not sure about the Fiio BTR3. I checked SPL and it definitely gets loud enough, but would it still sound good tho?
-are those Dekoni Elite Velour Pads that necessary?? 50$ + 25$ shipping = 75$ owwww
-cost 200$ more
Please audiophile gods, rescue me!!
