What a fascinating site and why haven't I found this before? ? I am looking for a pair of closed back headphones in the €500 to €1000 price range that I can use in my home office and the key requirement is that they have a similar sound to the HD800S. I know it cannot be an exact duplication but at least something that is not warm and muddy with a rolled off treble. Good soundstage would also be preferable. I have tried the Focal Elegia but I couldn't love them and there seemed to be something going on in the mids that I didn't like. I am wondering about the Beyerdynamic T5p but can't find anywhere to listen to them. The Dan Clark Aeon 2 closed looks good on paper but their low impedance is not ideal for my home office streamer/dac/amp. Any thoughts would be most helpful thank you.

Still consider the AEON closed because it has a flat impedance it does not change tone when connected to a higher output R amplifier. While comfortable the small pads sit very different around the ears than the HD800S. Perhaps the SRH-1540 is a good alternative. The DT1770 with some small alterations is what I use as a 'closed' replacement for my (EQ'ed) HD800.
For a lot less money the K371 but treble quality is not HD800S and the cable is microphonic, a bit too much I would say.

Thanks and yes I will do that once the contagion allows it. I have a pair of Audio Technica ATH MSR7b that I use for my DAP and come quite close to a HD800 style of sound but on a smaller scale. I guess I'm trying to find something in that spot between 500 and 1000€ that would be better than the ATs and still in a closed back package. Do you have any thoughts on the Beyer t5p at all please? I will take a look at the DT1770 but I am biased against single cable headphones as I have never heard one which gave good stereo imaging.

The ATHMSR7b is a good closed headphone. The AEON closed is a bit fuller and more 'relaxed' sound.
I listened to the T5P and while certainly not bad sounding didn't do it for me.
Till this day I have never been able to link stereo imaging to 3 or 4 wire cabling, at least not with high impedance headphones.

Yes indeed the ATs are really great for the money. In fact I haven't heard a better closed back that suits my taste at under €500. I will try out the Aeon's once I can get out to my dealer again as we are still in lockdown here. I was hoping the T5p might be an answer since I was thinking they were essentially a closed back T1 and that is not hugely different to the HD800.
In the meantime I'm going to order some higher quality cable for the ATs and see if that will get them running at their optimum.
Are the Aeons you have heard the new Aeon 2? I believe there was quite a bit of a change with the new version.

K872 is near the € 1000.- and might be interesting.
I heard and measured the original AEON closed.

Right, cool, thanks. These were not on my list at all but I will have a look and also where I could try them out. The dealer I mostly use has the Aeon range so I can access those. I might even see if I can get a loan pair of the T5p just to try and also as I can see they are on offer at Amazon UK right now.
It is the Lindemann Limetree Headphone amp I have in my home office set up which the Lindemann guys have declared unsuitable for anything under 30 ohms. Its such a great amp and partner to the Limetree Network streaming DAC but I guess if I loved the Aeons then there are other amp options such as Cayins iHA6 and would offer balanced outputs too.
Thanks indeed your feedback has been most helpful.
