Hi Frans,
Do you still have the Sennheiser HD 420SL? I just got a pair myself for $25 today. My first impressions weren't good: vocals, instruments sounded congested, treble lacked air as you said, bass was okay (KSC75 has more midbass). For fun I decided to slip on Sennheiser HD 400S earpads (non-bluetooth version of the 4.50) over the yellow pads, and that changed the sound signature for the better subjectively. Depending on the song, vocals are projected a bit more forward outside of my head and are clearer and a bit laid back, treble definitely has more air and isn't sibilant (I'd say it is better than a Bose QC25 on NC, and maybe on par or slightly better than an AKG K501/K500), bass probably benefited the most (it reaches lower than a K501/500 and HD650 subjectively, is tight and not boomy but a bit elevated, integrates well with the mids and didn't sound detached like my HD400S). It images really well, and is quite dynamic. One thing I'll have to point out is that I didn't clean the old foam out yet as just got the headphone.

I still have it but don't have those pads. Every pad you will use on it will have a substantially audible effect. Some may be for the better, others for the worse or just different. Some aspects may improve, others may be worse. Personal taste and the brain adjusting to a 'presentation' are also factors.
I haven't experimented with it, other than trying to restore it.
