Hi all, noob to this hobby checking in. So I read the recommended headphones section on the main site, and compared it to my budget (100 dollars max). I have no use for an open headphone right now, so quickly arrived at the one stated in the title after also reading the forum thread and the modding guide. Here's the issue: although some people actually complained about too much bass in the old forum thread, I actually find it lacking. Like a lot. Like it sounds like the stock system in my old, cheap car. Also isolation, what isolation? Higher frequencies sound nice though. It may be an issue with the headphones or actually with me. I'm coming from an LG HBS 900 (yeah feel free to laugh) which may not have anything to do with hi-fi but I just like it. Doesn't even need an equaliser. Music taste is pretty varied, from Hans Zimmer through Pink Floyd (The Wall mostly) to almost all and any kind of metal. No EDM or anything of that kind so never considered myself a bass-head, but might actually be one? Arrived at 50mm drivers hoping for good bass. I have had a backup JBL E30 for years which I have never liked and rarely use due to a lack of bass (and because it's on-ear). Maybe got sold a fake one, though at this price point I don't think it would be profitable for anyone, also bought from a respected online seller. It does go down to 10 Hz however. I'm listening to Korn on it right now and it just does not 'feel' right. Like someone pushed the 'surround' button (which would be the opposite of what I'm looking for). Sorry for the rant. I'm looking for comments on my situation, feel free to not-be-nice about my choice. I can still send it back though a 24 bit 192 KHz version of The Wall sounds nice on it, but not much else I've tried... Thanks for reading.

Maybe one of the drivers internally is wired incorrectly in phase. This would make the headphone sound a bit weird and having less bass.

Thanks for the quick reply! How would I go about fixing that?

So I have been playing around with a 10 band equalizer for quite some time and it's getting better.
What I described as 'surround' sound effect seems to be an overly enthusiastic midrange.
Bass is definitely there, it was just hiding behind all that midrange. Once given around +3 dB it's nice and 'dark' sounding just how I like it.
Midrange needed to be tuned down quite a bit, not quite sure yet where the optimum might lie, but should be somewhere between -4 and -10 dB.
Left the treble alone, the peak around 9 kHz seems to not bother me (yet). Haven't had the chance to listen to it for prolonged periods (hours uninterrupted) though.
Haven't done the mods to it since not sure if I'm keeping it or not, but set up this way it's starting to grow on me. Still have most of the weekend to decide. Should I bother doing them anyway? Not sure if I should (given my preferences in music).

The modifications will lower the amount of bass.

Even with the pleather pads? Seemed to me the mods raised the FR around 250 Hz but a bit below that too; and the velours pads lowered the bass by themselves. Did I misunderstand something?

see page 15 of the manual. While there is slightly more bass using pleather pads the overall amount of lows drops.
The mods are designed to make the tonal balance a bit flatter.

OK thank you. Would it make sense to just replace the felt with tissue then? One ear is touching the driver a bit I might add.

OK I'm confused. The above stated equaliser settings were on a very old desktop PC using Winamp. On the mobile phone, I'm using JetAudio (free version) and can't quite reproduce the same sound, getting close though. The +/- dB settings are substantially different than on the computer. Sound is 'good' on both, a bit better on the desktop PC.
Here comes the kicker. I'm listening right now at work, on a much newer Lenovo laptop. No active equaliser found.
It sounds just about PERFECT. Love it. But I just can't take this laptop home, can I?
What do I do now? I mostly use the phone these days. Should I buy the premium JetAudio which has a 20 band equaliser? Should I try a different app? If yes, which? It would be so easy if there wasn't this much damn difference between devices...

There should not be a difference between all of these devices.
Of course, some of the output stages of desktop PC may be below par.
There should be no difference in sound between a decent phone and lenovo laptop.

Alas they do differ a lot. Did some digging and the laptop has a Conexant SmartAudio HD driver with Dolby Audio enabled. Also, looked at your other Superlux tests and looks like (though semi-open) I should have bought the HD681-EVO.
Edit: What is the inner diameter of the pads of the 681 Evo? I have only found the 55mm of the original 681 which could be a problem as I have one quite 'tall' ear (6cm). I should still have some days to send the 622 Evo back in exchange for a 681 Evo...

Nevermind, found a music player app with enough sound settings to tune it to my ears and now I'm quite happy with it.
Still would like to know if the 681 EVO pads are 55 or 60 mm diameter, please. Not sending this one back, but I would probably buy one of those soon if it's the latter or if 622 Evo pads would fit on it.

PS for future reference (and for someone who finds this thread upon searching for this headphone): I'm rather slim and have a quite 'bony' head. It's possible all my struggles are because of issues with the seal. Put it 'too' forward and it puts pressure on the zygomatic arches. Not comfortable for too long. Put it a bit backwards and it's comfy for long use (for hours), but I think the (rear fifth of the) pads are not properly seated anymore. Tough luck I guess.
