Just read the S4X review by solderdude. Excellent as always! I've tried the S4X last year but I ended up returning them. I agree on the bass quality. But there is not much more I agree on. I like headphones with a forward presentation, like listening from the front row or even from the stage. But the S4X mids put this to an extreme and results in a congested, in-your-face headphone. The upper mids/treble are lacking, rolled off and to me it sounded veiled. Switching to the Audio Technica ATH-MSR7b it was like turning on the lights, much more clarity, details and air. It's declared as a semi-open, but from my experience it's much more like a closed back hp. If you cover the external grid with your hands (without pushing to much to avoid damages) the sound don't change an iota. If you try the same with a Sundara, you'll start to hear changes as soon as your hands are a couple of centimetres away from the grid. Not a bad headphone if you like an intimate, laid back and smooth presentation, but not worth the price from a sound point of view, imho. Sample to sample variability? Unfortunately I can't find the copy of the measurements graph I made before returning them, but I'm pretty sure there was a hole in the upper mids/lower treble region.

Did you try the 1.1 version or the original one? (different headband and pads)
Yes, it is overly warm. With some EQ it really becomes a good sounding headphone.
My gripes are: Pads too small in diameter. Tilt 'range' of the cups (virtually non existent). Microphony of the headphone and cable. Out of the box tonality (too warm).

Did you try the 1.1 version or the original one? (different headband and pads) I think the older (first?) version. It was around March 2021 if I remember well. Anyway, a guy I know from a different forum had a mail exchange with Rok on the subject. Here's the reply: Tilt 'range' of the cups (virtually non existent). Microphony of the headphone and cable. I agree on the limited tilt range. I had some trouble to find a good positioning and honestly I never found a position 100% satisfying. I have a medium size head and I always ended up having one cup pressing under the ear more than the other. Not a deal breaker though thanks to the pads. Yes, it is overly warm. With some EQ it really becomes a good sounding headphone. Without EQ I ended up preferring the AT ATH-MSR7b. You know how it goes at times, you try a new hp and you ended up reappraise another one you already had.

The S4 had all velour pads. The S4X 1.0 and 1.1 are indeed basically the same (same pads).
Between S4R and S4R 1.1 the differences are substantial.
