Hi Guys, I can definiely remember that the Vaio (is a desktop format and) did offer SigmaTel High Definition Audio. Finding the Vaio in the garage (which is full of things I didn't throw away in case they might come in useful some day ) should not be too difficult some time and I'll post a picture of the motherboard for you guys to peruse. Point to note: - the 5 + 1 phono sound outputs are on a separate PCI card which may have it's own audio chip in addition to anything on the MoBo - I can't remember whether there were other sound outputs on different cards, except to say it definitely had one HDMI output somewhere. Hope this helps but, knowing me, it probably just adds further confusion . Cheers, Dave.

The owner had borrowed it to another friend for testing purposes but yesterday he got it back and called me to offer it again, as you maost probably have guessed he didn't have to say it twice. He doesn't use it for music only for testing and comparing so he doesn't mind letting others enjoy it most of the time.

Yes, I have from you as well. Now waiting for the correct dose to go further.
Btw, you should revive a thread on the USB interface thingy, as at **, for those coming onboard here. That's interesting.

Hi Chong, welcome on bard!
I'd revive the Amanero COmbo384 USB board but there aren't many digital DIYers 'round here, it is mostly HP related in one way or another. Still if you are interested in getting up to date I'll open a thread.

New JRiver Media Center V.19 (19.0.25) is out.
Significant new audio related features are:
- Decoded playback from RAM: previously compressed files like ALAC, FLAC, etc. were cached "as is" in RAM and decoded from there realtime. In MC19 files are decoded as they are read from disk and stored in RAM uncompressed so a FLAC should be identical to WAV resource wise. Obviously this method requires large amounts of RAM and, as JRiver limits itself to 1GB system memory, not all files will fit. In these cases the maximum possible will be cached and refreshed with another chunk as memory allows.
- Realtime PCM->DSD conversion: It is now possible to convert PCM files to DSD real time with the choice of outputting either DSD64 using DoP or 2xDSD using ASIO in case of compatible DACs.
- R128 volume normalization
- JRiver as an ASIO device: JRiver can be used as some sort of ASIO "virtual" sound card and configured as an output to other ASIO capable media players. This option will make possible to use JRiver as a "sound renderer" and benefit from the features above and all other JRiver options while using a player the user prefers for whatever the reason.

I've downloaded the trial and checked JRiver's PCM to DSD realtime conversion only to find out that it also performs resampling of non 44.1K based files. Output is always 2.82M (DSD64) or 5.6M (DSD128) independent of file's sample rate. I would have prefered a more minimalistic approach that avoided additional resampling and have it output 3.07M (DSD64) or 6.1M (DSD128) for 48K based files but I understand they may have chosen that path for broader compatibility as not all DSD DACs out there support 48K based DSD. The Amanero board supports both 44.1K and 48K based DSD for all DSD formats up to 8x DSD (DSD512).

why is not everyone on the dsd bandwagon? with so many companies bringing out dsd capable dacs why is it some are not. monarchy audio is one example. schitt is another, although they did bring out the "loki" dsd only dac, which is now shelved!

I wonder whether it's the availability/cost of players? The Fiios convert dsd to pcm I think, although I can play them through hq player on the computer.
It seems that FLAC is as far as most want to go at the moment.......

I would say in latest generations of DACs PCM only tends to be the exception rather than the standard, more so in mid to high end.

Some of the DSD files that I have been listening to seem to give better impact I think, but the trouble is, I know what I'm listening to and so can be easily swayed!! Even older recordimgs from the 70's appear to have more imoact and sound slightly cleaner from DSD files. It's not easy to pinpoint what it is though in all honesty
I must admit, I've become very keen on them although I have had people tell me that I can't possibly hear any differences. I'm just not sure. On some recordimgs, it seems quite obvious while on others, not very apparent. Depends on what it is......
or whether it's just a different master?
I blame Javier. He converted me!!
