another thing i find odd. Amr/ifi are all over dsd in the ifi range, but the high end amr gear, not.

Thorsten Loesch , Ifi's main DAC designer, basically believes the only good sounding chip is the Philips TDA1541 inside their top of the line DAC (80s 16 bit technology) with a few old R2R chips like AD1865, AD1862, PCM63 or PCM1702 being barely acceptable and everything else being crap, specially SDM chips like the micro's DSD1793. If one twisted his arm he'll say some modern ICs are OK for the price like the ES9023 but then only feeding them PCM. IMVHO he doesn't really understand the innards of DSD as, say, Jussi does but to each his own.

Based on that , would you say the ifi range was a serious attempt at dsd ?
(If the main designer is not a fan of dsd and the dac's chip.)
Are there better products to be had for similar money? Ie mojo or ud503.

Simon, I'll leave Javier to advise re. which is the better DAC.
If you are considering a Mojo though and have any more general questions re. usage etc. feel free to PM me or ask in the Mojo thread and I'll do my best to answer them.

I have been considering the mojo but just picked it out as an example for my question. Ideally if I had the option it would be a unit that is just a dac. I don't need a built in amp or battery pack. 2qute is interesting but rather than wasting money on built in amp chord have spent it on the case. If they made a chord "notsoqute" ie in a plain case for desktop use with dsd256 then I would be all over it. There always seems to be a compromise somewhere.

Who knows. With the success of the Mojo and the fact some are using it as a desktop DAC perhaps they'll release something along those lines It's funny because it is surprisingly hard to find a DSD capable DAC sub £600 or so that doesn't have a built in amp or battery. Fostex, ifi, Mojo, TEAC, Marantz, Pioneer, Sony, Grace....they all do. Schiit? They make standalone DACs but don't seem keen on supporting DSD.

Schiit don't believe in DSD and feel (like some others) it is inferior to PCM. They did have the Loki a while ago which was a cheap DSD only DAC.

Then there is idac2, but again it has an amp and , for me, I don't like the design where rca connectors are on the front.
