i am trying to focus on the "cheaper" headphones like this, the 990 and the shures. though i did make the mistake of reading a couple of reviews of the focal elear, wished i had not, as i now fancy them too! my will power has the breaking strain of a cocktail stick, unfortunately! I really enjoy trying "cheaper" headphones far more than I do the expensive ones. Much less stressful when it comes to buying decisions as I'm far less concerned about making a bad one. And then when the headphones arrive I don't need to worry about handling them with kid gloves quite so much (not that I mistreat any of my headphones). And to be honest I derive just as much listening pleasure out of them as the "better" more expensive ones, which makes me wonder why I even bother!! There's something nice about getting off the beaten track and either trying a less well known headphone or one whose time in the spotlight has long since passed. As much as I liked the Focal Spirit Pro and Classic I don't fancy the Elear at all. Too much of what I've read thinks it's not one deserving of the attention (may audition one day if chance arises though). But on a more positive note Frans seems to be quite smitten by it diyah.boards.net/thread/1469/focal-utopia

If you like the sound of them Simon, pads aren't that expensive, or just a good soapy wash.

That's a pity Simon. There's a kind of similarity with the th900 kind of bass and strong top. I find them ok, but then again, had them for years in some form. Probably very accustomed to them. They are seen a lot around in studios too. Especially radio places.

Absolutely Simon. It becomes a different beast while still retaining that DT770 'flavour'. I really like it and use it a lot along with the HD650. The treble sting has gone as well so it's just more even sounding.

I thought you would like them Simon, isolation is very good and through a filtered Kameleon they come alive, they are also very comfortable and you can wear them for hours without any problems.

you're absolutely right about the comfort, had them on yesterday for nearly 4 hours with only very short breaks. no problems at all

Simon, if you can find a pair of the Philips Citiscape SHL 5905 and modify them, then they offer a great sound with similiar isolation levels as the DT770. Cheap enough as well, I got mine already modded from frans for about £60? can't remember the exact price I paid though. Even with their faults I use them alot as they are comfortable to wear for long periods and sound pretty good for a cheap headphone.

They do actually match in timbre quite well. I must admit, I like the dt770 filter a lot. Frans has kept a little of that fruity bass so the Beyer sound is still pretty much there.
