Let's hope so, they have to skimp somewhere + driver differs anyway.
Otherwise, felt is pretty easy to apply and sometimes has a positive influence on the sound.
I don't like pleather pads though, especially the thicker kind.
The thin stuff, like on the K550, doesn't bother me that much.

One that I prefer to the M50 is the Yamaha MT220. No where near as fat in the bass and goes very low. Now I'm wondering how the 220 compares with the m40!!
