Very nice! So far I think I've got the best results with the HM5 pads, but it might have made them a little dark, do you own a pair? Have you played with damping the central hole in the driver assembly? damping a hole like this is all Beyer uses to tune their driver to their 770, 880 and 990 enclosures.

I don't have HM5 pads. I should buy a pair one of these days. Really like it with the (velours) 940 pads and felt. I am a sucker for velours pads..... It made me to decide to keep it after all. Was going to return it 'cause I already have too many good headphones lying around. Didn't have a (portable) closed over-ear headphone and this one sounds 'good' for that purpose (modified that is) Haven't played with the air hole in the magnet. AFAIK it is there to ensure the membrane can move up and down freely. Also need to measure how far it extends beyond 20kHz one of these days but my mic stops above 30kHz. It goes about twice as far as my own hearing

Yeah, the HM5 pads are the softest and plushiest that I've tried. I like velour as well, but most pads offer considerably less isolation than their pleather counterparts. So far I'm satisfied with my purchase, but I can't help wondering how do they compare to other pairs, I liked how they sounded against the portables by the recordings, but how do they compare 'IRL' to the stock dt1350, for instance?, I felt they sounded tinny and 'small' in the recordings, but it may not be the case.

I don't care much for the stock DT1350. IMO it MUST be used with EQ and at least the newer (wider) pads.
Once EQ'ed I really enjoy the sound. It differs from the 40X and the DT1350 is more 'midrangy' in stock form it sounds 'hollow'
The M40X (with some mods) is a very enjoyable headphone that doesn't do much wrong on well made recordings.
The DT1350 is an on-ear and needs quite some clamping force and positioning to get it to sound good. Also there seems to be quite a product variance.
It's not a headphone I could recommend to anyone. I DO like it quite a lot (with proper EQ and HD25 pads).
On direct comparison it is exposed for what it is but for me it has that 'KSC75' asset. The KSC75 is a coloured headphone that sounds 'mediocre' when compared with good headphones directly but when you listen to it exclusively it sounds prefect, the brain easily adjusts. So it is with the DT1350 (filtered)
Headphones like the (filter corrected) T50RP and filtered HD650 sound good from the moment you put them on and when compared to flagships directly.

Thanks for your input Edit: I forgot to mention, the cups are not completely closed, there is a small bass port next to the back-facing hinges of the headband gimbals.

I think it's a pressure equalization hole. closing or opening it doesn't have any influence in the FR at all, this makes me think it isn't a port.
There will also be some slight leakage from the hinges itself.

Watching with interest. I also use the sure 940 pads on my m50's with no other mods. Comphy pads The wife has all but abscond with my M50's which I use in my travels and have enjoyed so I believe I will give the 50x's a go. Just a good, affordable and tough headphone. I like a bit of bass, so they fit the general sound signature I like.

These pads also look fantastic but they're kinda on the expensive side.

Can't check them any more (even when I had the pads). I returned the M40X because it paled in direct comparison with the modded K551. The dip in the 3kHz area became immediately obvious and as the K551 is also closed I saw no reason to hang on to it any more.
If I hadn't compared them directly I would have kept them as they sounded really nice. The 'lack' of clarity (compared to K551) isn't a real dealbreaker but as said when you have a better alternative at hand why hang on to it.
For those that don't like recordings that sound shrill/shouty on some headphones may find the 40X better sounding though.
Going to try the Fidelio X1 next (open)

Yeah, that dip is problematic because it hides a lot of details that the driver is able to reproduce, I actually listen to my pair EQ'd, otherwise it sounds kinda dark and veiled (nothing like the TH02, though, those are unfixable), wonder if the M50x is even wonkier. The K55x perform nicely after mods for sure, but they are gargantuan, I don't think they would fit even inside my shoulder bag I've been eyeing those pads to use with my modded T50RP, actually. People say they offer a middle ground between pleather and velour in isolation/bass, while being as comfortable as velours. I worry that it will perform worse than with the 840 pads, though.

Pads tend to have a substantial influence on the sound and the effect may not be the same on other headphones.
No idea how the FR will change with those pads as the 1540 has a bass hump and lack of subbass extension, might be the pads, might be the driver.
I never could get the M50 to sound the way I like it. Also found the M40X already too 'dark' and think the M50 would be too dark for my taste but may not be 'dark' to others. A matter of preference and what one has gotten used to.
It took me a while to appreciate 'flat'. As a consequence I don't like the HD650 stock any more but am totally in love with it again EQ'ed.

I've grown more and more interested in these, sadly they are out of impulse buy territory for me, is anyone planning to test these?

Thanks for this fantastic information. It looks like you are using RoomEq Wizard for your graphs. I'm new to all of this but have learned to play a bit with some of these tools. I'd like to come up with a correction file for Foobar2000. Could you share your REW files for this or perhaps what electronic filters it recommends?
thanks,
Pete
