The K612 is 120 Ohm and if you want to play it a bit louder than just average levels you may need more output voltage than the NX-1 can deliver. For 'normal' listening levels it will not be a problem driving the K612 from this amp.
The K612 doesn't need a lot of power, it just needs a somewhat higher voltage than lower impedance headphones.

Interesting and witty posts!I bought an NX-1 a while back and am also very impressed when using it on my iPod Classic with HD598 (which is of course easy to drive!) Currently amazon.co.uk have the AKG K612 on at only £84.99, but other posts I have read on head-fi.org state that the K612 need more power than the NX-1 will give. Perhaps they like their music too loud? I am a bit confused! I like the little NX1. I also have a Topping digital amp... NX2? They work ok with the AKG. I don't tend to listen too loud but if you whack it up; especially if the battery gets a bit low perhaps, it might struggle a bit. I'd prefer something beefier with the AKGs though if I'm honest. Fiio e12a is a bit better if you want just a bit more power mobile.

I have read conflicting advice about the Topping NX-1 and its ability to drive the AKG612. Rabbit and another poster have said that it powers the 612 to moderate levels, but might struggle at higher volume. Is that on low gain or high gain? I find that when I switch to high gain with my Akg271 the volume increases a lot, but that is a relatively easy load at 55 Ohms. Will the Topping power the 612 when switched to high gain?

I was using it on high gain. It's struggling really and it might be better to look at the other ones - nx3 and nx5, although they are more expensive. The nx3 is quite good value and barely distinguishable from the nx5 which I like a lot because it has a little more kick. I often use it with an hd600 in the garden!!

Well,I took the plunge and bought the K612 and because I prefer to listen at low to moderate levels I find that the NX-1 works well with them. On most tracks I listen at around 5/10 or 6/10 and can hear lots of details and enjoy a wide soundstage. I can't thank you and other posters on this site for debunking the K612 so hard to power myth! In my humble opinion the K612 are the best value quality headphones out there at the moment, currently around £87 on Amazon here in the UK, certainly for classical and jazz. I have also tried the Cayin C5 with them and while it drove them effortlessly on low gain setting, I found the sound a bit warmer and the bass softer than with the NX-1! Maybe I have tin ears?

Glad it worked out for you. I agree, the k612 is a great headphone which can be altered if you find the bass low, just by changing the pads to k702 ones. Those pads are angled and a bit harder so that the k712 almost sounds like an hd600. If you like it as it is though, then that's good news. The k702 pads make it darker. I also listen at lower volumes but still do like a potent amp to ensure that there's lots there for headroom.
