Some good points there, fair play. I came to my 650's via Q701's. I found the treble spike of the Q's (@2k) unbearable after a while. I'm not averse to using the parametric EQ in JRiver but I could never really tone down that spike without detriment to surrounding frequencies.
The 650's on the other hand, while not perfect, do allow me to tweak the (relatively minor) weaknesses with no detriment to anything else. I have a low-shelf filter @70hz with a 3dB gain and a Q factor of 2. It's not a huge boost but it does firm up the bottom end. At the top I have a high-shelf filter @5500hz with a gain of 2dB and a Q of 3.
I use the bass filter more than the treble one which is only reserved for particular recordings that I know have an intrinsically smooth treble to begin with.
I also use crossfeed but that's another discussion. A physical filter is an interesting idea though, kudos.

The advantage of a dedicated analog filter is it matches exactly what needs to be done in order to get it correct. This is harder (or impossible) to do this is accurate as the purpose designed filter does.
Given the fact that you use EQ tells me 'flat' is what you are looking for as the HD650 filter does something very similar as your EQ.
So the answer is ... flat is indeed desirable.
The AKG series is nearly impossible to correct (the Kameleon can only improve it somewhat), the HD650 can be corrected very well and has lower distortion as well. In fact I haven't seen other headphones having this low distortion figures and is why I selected it over the HD600 which IMO had somewhat higher distortion in the upper part of voices mainly.

P.S. I may move these last few posts to the Kameleon thread... they fit better in there. No problem to sidetrack a thread here though. Almost all threads do... sometimes we thus move a few posts to other threads in other cases its just left as it is.

Aye, feel free to move it as it doesn't really fit here. It's difficult to know when you're new to the forum.
I guess I've never truly heard a "flat" frequency response then as that does seem to be my direction of travel. Hmm... It's all money at the end of the day.

Well if you EQ'ed your HD650 the way you described then you heard a 'flat' headphone .

I enjoy a good 'coloured' sound but for really critical and accurate listening, you can't beat flat. (Or as near as dammit) Nothing stands out as raised above anything else and good recordings sound way more natural. For some, natural is boring because that's what we hear all day long.
I love the HD650 sound but am aware that the HD600 is 'flatter'. The filtered hd650 must sound terrific since it goes lower and offers less distortion than the hd600. I move between many headphones, but for me, flat is way better and should be the reference point for headphones. Although the HD600 has more distortion, I tend to use it more than the HD650 since it is more 'neutral' for me, although has Solderdude says, bass isn't as extended and more distortion is present. But hey, we haven't all got our filters yet!!
Of course there are also other factors to consider such as distortion and damping.

Since my switch from Xray CD player to pioneer n50 and now the stunning Cambridge Audio Stream Magic 6 (Thanks Jeff), I am now 99% happy with my system of modified XCan V2/Pre and uprgraded XA200 monoblock amps (Thanks again Frans) through acoustic energy AE1 loudspeakers and MJ acousitcs reference subwoofers, all cables are QED silver plated ofc. ........ So like you Jeff I just want to find enough time to listen for hours to music and not the system. ......... I like the sound of your system (figuratively that is, not literally. Like the idea of AE1s with subs. Glad, too, you're happy with Cambridge. Just shows these days that good front ends do not need to cost the earth. I try to keep Mondays to myself, while my wife is at work. We both are fortunate now to only work part-time so I have one or days a week when I'm home alone and that's when the chores get overlooked.
