i have been a massive Elvis fan for longer than i can remember, but also enjoy a wide range of music. just curious to know who is your fave male vocalist? (and why, of course?)

That's really difficult. I like different singers for different reasons. Roger Daltrey for his rough cut edge style of delivery. Chris de Burgh for his fantastic story telling abilities. The King Crimson (later) vocalist who has this really clean delivery and ringing tone to his voice. Pavarotti for his sheer power. Placido Domingo for his pathos. Mario Lanza for that rough edged operatic voice. Richard Tauber for his silky tenor delivery. The yodelling singer from Focus!! I actually liked Ozzie's voice. Pete Gabriel's voice actually affects me!! The young Robert Plant. The lilting tenor voice of the Fairport Convention. (Chris Lesley) The young Tom Jones. Poor little Frankie Lymon. Charlie Drake? Wonderful Freddie Mercury. Weird Michael Jackson's voice. Mad as a hatter but voice was spot on. Charles Aznavour. Mr Sign a Tray. (Sinatra) Neil Sedaka. Al Jolson. Paul Robeson. So many different qualities in all of them. Not perfect voices, but they connect with me.

Now Elvis, in the main, does nothing for me. I'll have to have a think sbout the male vocalist question. Off the top of my head Cliff is a great singer, but mostly he chooses such poor material.
Meanwhile, what about Lance Ellington off 'Srictly'? He manages such a diverse range of songs with little notice.
Sinatra is brilliant... Wee small hours? and Carreras ? More comments later maybe. Good thread.

I like Sinatra's voice as well Derek. His old recordings sound remarkably good as well. Surprising given their age.

It's nowhere near as easy (or fun) to pick out male vocalists as it is with females but I'll have a go.
By a million miles my favourite rock & roll voice would be John Fogerty. His range is incredible and there's just no pretence with him, he gives it everything.
In Blues, or grungier material I'd have to go for Tom Waits. I know that technically he can't sing a note but that's not necessarily the point of a vocalist. He conveys his message perfectly.
Any of the Bee Gees, just because.
Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Harmonies are so difficult for most of us but he built an empire around them.
Al Stewart. Check out Year Of The Cat and try to place another singer there. True perfection.
I'd also pick out Chris de Burgh. If it hadn't been for Lady In Red he'd be in the glitterati right now. Sometimes success can kill.

First man that comes to mind is Harry Connick Junior, he's sort of a crooner and he has made some funky escapades. Why? Just because, I like his voice, I really do.
Thinking a bit more there's Jeff Buckley, he can really move me.
There's also the Boss. I don't really like to listen to Springsteen on record, but seeing him perform makes it a completely different story (never seen him live though). He's so sincere in what he does, there's so much energy in his performances.
Matthew Bellamy, but that's more the complete picture of Muse, the theatrical performance.
Other male performers that can really move me are Jacques Brel and Stromae (I mention them in teh same sentence because there is so much resemblance between the two).
There are other bands and performers that I could mention, but these would be the ones I mention because of their vocal qualities.
Cheers, Marc

Yeah, Harry Connick junior. How about Michael Feinstein - anyone like him? I do.
Now... Bee Gees... I don't really get on with male falsetto in rock/pop (Tragedy?), but I'm OK with it in the early/classical genre.

Charlie Drake wasn't much of an actor either. Or comedian.
