Jeff, I'm beginning to think you're a bit of a tart actually!!
Philips seem to be doing some nice headphones though. I remember one that they discontinued that was considered really good and I missed that one as well!!! Frans got one just before they went completely.

I picked up a pair of these cheap on ebay so I thought I'd try the mod. However, the pads don't feel like they want to come off without a fight. In fact, it feels like I will need break them to get them off - it doesn't look like you can take them off and put them back on again. This doesn't seem right to me as I'm uncomfortable with the amount of force I think I'll need to apply to get them off. They don't seem to locate in a groove - they seem to be fixed under the plastic 'music seal' ring? Or am I being a big girls blouse?

girls blouse... (well sort off) In the brown version I had they came off very easily. It doesn't have the 'music seal' though. I gently 'pulled' the pad free but when the first pad was removed I found out that there is a much easier way. Removing the pads is quite simple really. When you pull the pad away from the center (thus towards the edge) at the 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock position on the driver side you will see a small philips head. Loosen those 4 screws 1 or 2 turns and the baffle with the pad on it comes free and you can pull off the pads. You can also remove the 4 screws (at 12 and 6 o'clock position they can be hiding under thin plastic sheeth) so the whole baffle + driver comes off. The driver is connected with THIN wiring to the cups so be carefull when removing the baffle/pads. It would have been handy if the Shure pads could be secured in a similar way BUT because of the integrated dust cover in the pads you cant get there with a screw driver. The integrated dustcover keeps the felt in place. An option would be to cut out the dustcover, glue the felt disc in place on the baffle where the driver isn't open and then you can screw the pads on tightly. I plan to re-write the article about this version as well but that make take some time. At the moment my spare time is short in supply.

Removing the 4 screws is quite easy. You need to open it up anyway to install the sticky felt ring under the driver. Pull the pad sideways, loosen 4 screws.

I already tried loosening those, Frans. I guess I just need to pull a bit harder.

If you take the 4 screws completely out the whole balffle including pads can be pulled out. Beware of the wire connecting the driver,

OK - the pads are off. Just a note to anyone else doing this, once the screws are loosened a couple of turns give the baffle a wiggle to loosen it from the cup (there are a couple of lugs on the baffle that keep it stuck to the cup - that's why I couldn't get them off). Rather than taking the screws all the way out when doing this - just loosen them. This will prevent the whole lot coming off in your hand and risking damaging the wires inside.

........ or make 4 tiny holes in the dustcover to get the screws in?
Mods are done - not a bad headphone for £16 plus the same again for the Shure pads. Way more comfortable than the 1350s and definitely wearable for long periods. Bass seems less monotonous - I imagine it could be fatiguing unmodified and the treble is now a lot smoother.
Great job, Frans!

I have been modding my grey one (that one also has the 'music seal' and by ear haven't been getting the same results as with the black version (without music seal) I cut out the dust protectors of the pads and 'fixed' the pads under the music seal. It is more bassy and less 'clear' as the black version. Will have to investigate this further. Using SRH840 pads though.
GBP 16.- is not much and about twice as cheap as mine !
I find them quite comfortable but my ears get hot quite quickly.

Could air be leaking out from the music seal when there is no pad fitted and hence reducing the bass in the black version?

The black one doesn't have that 'pad clamp' at all so it is unlikely. Maybe the sealing differs maybe the drivers... I will have to look into this and possibly re-write the article for the music seal version. I have just bought another grey one (15 Euros) and will compare all 3 and see how the spread is. Will also need to get me a few more SRH940 pads as well.
The grey version is MUCH bassier (and U shaped) than the modded black one (going by ear) and will have to measure them to see what's up with these versions.

Nah... second hand He probably didn't want to ask a high price knowing the volume control is failing.

I have revisited the modification article and added some info about the silver/grey version and how to take it apart. Fortunately the grey and black versions do not measure and sound different. They do have a somewhat different mechanical structure.
