Strangely enough when you look at the data sheets the drivers appear to differ.
The black one: • Diaphragm: PET • Freq range: 17 - 23.000Hz • sensitivity: 102 dB • Max power: 50 mW
the brown one:
• Diaphragm: Mylar-dome • Frequentiebereik: 12 - 23.500 Hz • sensitivity: 103 dB • Max power:: 30 mW
I could not measure many differences so don't think there are different drivers.
My newer black version has a higher efficiency than the ones with volume control but all those controls are not really functioning any more. Chances are the efficiency will be the same after the vol control has been removed though.

The music seal works well both to hold the pads but also for the bass. I sealed the one that you modded and it just raises the bass level to a rather pleasant level. Less than the one that I got with just pads changed but really nicely balanced actually.
The one I got just has a single button to answer calls. No volume up and down thank goodness.

Actually about GBP 52.- new. (the HP = E 50.60 + shipping = E 21.- = E 71.50. still cheaper than the one from the UK which is E 81.- Add: pads = E 19.00 (but only if I buy them in quantities of 5 or more) otherwise pads = E 28.- Shipping to UK = E 13.- (track+trace) so in total that would be E 113.- in materials = GBP 81.- When using 2nd hand (black with brown headband) = E 30.- for HP (depends on how much I had to pay + shipping) pads = E 28.- shipping = E 13.- total = around E 71 (or even E 65 if I order 5 pairs of pads) This makes around GBP 47.- to GBP 51.- I can order the black one from Germany for you if you want. It doesn't say how many he has in stock though or even if he still has them. the black-brown ones can also be ordered new. Delivered at my house for E 55.- (GBP 40.-) www.hoofdtelefoonstore.nl/product/191290/philips-citiscape-uptown-bruin.html

Once modded, the only part that is brown is the inside of the headband, Chris. Since the replacement pads are black velour. Once screwed down, they really don't move and it tightens up the bass while giving a little bit more than neutral, but actually, I really like that. For me, neutral plus a little raise somewhere in the bass sounds really good. Sub bass is extra good!! I think Frans might have a brown/black there already modded which would come out at the same kind of price level as a new headphone.

Ian I was dead set on a pair of all black phones until I read this post, it totally makes sense to go for the brown/black version if the only visible part of the brown is under the headband. I might as well go for the brown/black and save some money I am looking forward to hearing them now I have let Frans know so they may be in my possession sooner rather than later. Thanks for all of your help Ian Chris

I have two here Chris.... a silver pair modded by Frans and a Black/Brown pair modded by me. You have to be careful of fine wires insideand faffing around with the damned screws under the felt to get the baffle off. In the end, I cut the felt off the bloody pads so I could screw the seal down easily and then cut some old Senn inner foam to cover the drivers. Works perfectly well. The black/brown looks fine and it ends up more black in any case. If you don't like it, I'll buy it and give you another fiver over the top!! I love them. they have a sound like no other portable headphone I've heard. They sound like full sized big headphones that go really deep. Nothing like the K550 as you'll hear. Not as treble etched as the DT770. Also, I'm not being funny, but Frans is damned neat in the way he mods them. He doesn't beat them up in the process like I might!!! They are really worth it. A bargain actually and after what I've read in my book about the Dutch, they are very good at sniffing out good deals. Frans hasn't let the Dutch down here to be sure!!!

Ian, I had a look at the PDF frans posted about the mods and thought better of it, I am usually not bothered about having a go at anything like this, but chickened out as I know how easy it is to make a mistake with the really fine wires in the drivers of my dads Leak electrostatic headphones. I did mend them in the end but best left to the expert eh Also a very kind offer to buy them if i don't like them, but I have a good feeling they will be staying especially when that Polaris gets to grips with them. Frans: I think a pair with the musicseal are more to my liking they just look nicer

these modded cans you sold me Frans, have no right to sound this good for this money. for me they beat my d600. the only real fault with them is the fragile feeling cable. i am using mine with a 125ohm imp adapter , as they are a slight bit sensitive otherwise. brilliant, well happy with them.

I haven't looked into replacing the cable. Have no idea how to access the cable entry part (nor did I actively look for it other than trying to pry it open) It's an anti-tangle cable and although it feels flimsy works fine and seems quite sturdy. I wouldn't replace the cable unless it is torn, broken or janked into pieces.
It's just a cheap headphone ...
They do have a really pleasant sound with big bass.
