K550 - £70 £10 postage Only DIYAH people. Hi Ian, are the K550's modded flat? I have been re-considering this Flat frequency response lark and I am now becoming more aware of the the bass hump everyone goes on about with the DT770's. I was also in a local pub last Saturday and there was a live band on called inferno. Not brilliant but OK, but again I was aware of what you said a while back that not many recordings have deep bass - well neither did this live band. So I may be interested in these phones, depends on what work is involved to make them flat if they are not already? Cheers Chris

Hi Chris. Unfortunately, no. They're as new.
If you want flat and really good musical, the hd650 and Kameleon is way better.

With some extra shipping (to me first) either the K550 or K551 can be 'flattened' or almost flatten them (give them a wee bit more treble and warmth)
By itself these headphones are quite good performers but somewhat warmly coloured, some have a sharp edge, others not so much.

Thanks for that Frans. I am not really sure what my best option is? I do like the Beyer sound, and I also liked the the AKG sound and they both had roughly the same amount of isolation. Would I be better to mod my Beyers or is there a better option out there for a really good sounding flat closed headphone with excellent isolation? not asking too much eh

Thanks Ian, Anybody else having bother with the internet? mine has been a right pig lately - going on and off all night. Anyway hd650 with kameleon is probably a really nice combination, but I am afraid open backed headphones are a no no in my listening environment. Headphones have to be closed back with excellent isolation or they are of no use to me. I will have a long think about the k550's and let you know if I am still interested, that's if they don't go before I make my mind up

The DT770 mods quite nicely by the look of it, although it doesn't resolve as well as some others like the Senn.
Closed headphones are a difficult area. I've always tended to regard them as a real compromise tbh. That is until I met the TH900 which has a beautiful sound.
What about a Fostex t40? Not that well extended but amazingly flat. With a filter, it extends further up but some like the warmth of the last bit of extension missing.
To my ears, the k550 still felt a bit 'off' long term. To me, it lost its vibrancy and sounded kind of over damped. You could well find that with the DT770. Some headphones have their own character that you may well lose by getting them flat. To me, some are much better than others. The standout headphones to me are Senn650, t40/50 and believe it or not, the Philips that Frans treated. Those ones seem to go flat without sounding constricted. I think there is a balance to be had between 'flat' and the feeling of being perhaps over damped and too controlled.
It's difficult to explain because they measure much better, but imo, some headphones don't perhaps perform at their best if controlled too much. The ones I've heard are all 'improved' but I have definite favourites that deliver both a flat fr as well as an unconstricted musical sound.
You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear comes to mind here. Frans works absolute wonders with headphones but some haven't really got it in them to sound 'great' although they may be more accurate.
He puts it so well himself when he says mediocre headphones can sound good, but good headphones sound great. He's absolutely spot on.
Of course, there are also people who don't actually like the sound of 'flat'. It's understandable since to some extent, they have 'learned' a certain headphone sound and flat can sound quite underwhelming to them.
Bit like food with no salt.

No salt. Good analogy, Ian. Last night after a few hours with the HD800, I switched to my stock T50RP. I could hear its flaws but it added some "salt " to the music. I'm coming to the conclusion after 40 plus years of listening to audio equipment that changing things up once in a while isn't a bad idea. After all wouldn't we eventually get tired of the same meal every night at some point, no matter how good? Maybe that's why I rarely sell anything. Or I am just not good with money. Nice pics BTW.

I think that's why I have so many, Ron. I switch flavour every now and them, but have a few definite favourites.
The standouts for me are
The Philips headphone that Frans 'flattened'. T40 'flattened' T50!with changed pads. D2000 Th900 Senn hd650 with filter.

Can you ship them to Frans for me to get modded flat? obviously I will pay the extra postage. Frans can you give me a price to mod these flat, having looked at the mod thread I do not trust myself to mod them with the very delicate fine wires that are in them, i would rather leave it to you because you know what you are doing. Thanks Chris

Chris, wait till Frans gives you a price and then pm. He may be up to his neck at the moment. I'll hold them here. You don't want the portable version? Also... You don't want to hear them before mod? You might prefer it, since I know you found flat difficult. Flat isn't compulsory!!!! my own preference is flat with a 3db bass lift.

I don't think I want the portable version K551? the ones that Frans lent me, the cable is far too short I was in two minds to make a filter for the Dt770's then i could switch from flat to normal, but changed my mind? I will see what Frans has to say about a 3db bass lift - I dont know what the bass lift is on the Dt770's but it must be quite high? to be honest I don't really know for sure what I want - I love the Beyers but are now aware of the bass lift and I also liked the AKG's but like you say Flat takes a bit of getting used too
