Anyone who has ever liked any blues or folk song will love this website.
Anyone who is genuinely into blues will have heard at one time or another the name of Alan Lomax or his father, John.
I remember the interview I saw of him talking to Leadbelly. At that point Leadbelly (Huddie Ledbetter) was in prison for the second time for attempted murder. His first prison term was for actual murder. He had stabbed a relative to death in a fight over a woman. Lomax successfully petitioned the Governor for permission to interview him in prison, and Leadbelly sings a couple of songs as well. Real blues stuff!
Although why anyone would want to take on Leadbelly, who was a big man with a short temper, is beyond me - but they did. He would end up in prison several more times for assault with a deadly weapon (knife). He was quite a character.
The Lomax’s came to the UK (they visited many other countries outside the US) in the 50’s, and recorded loads of English, Irish and Scottish folk musicians. This is included in this website. In fact, from what I can gather (I’ve only just come across the site through Audiostream.com), everything they ever recorded is on the site. Remember though, I'm talking about 'Field-recordings' done on portable open-reel machines, so the sound quality is dependent on the ambient surroundings, but for the most part is surprisingly good, considering.
It’s being called a genuine Inter-national treasure.
It’s jam-packed with fantastic music, interviews, radio programs etc of Folk and Blues musicians that we will never see again.
I will link to the Audiostream article (which contains the link for the Lomax website) as it contains the background information.
People like Ian (Rabbit), Alan (Drumdrym), Joe (JKB89), and Ron (Ronzo56) who are into blues/folk music, would I’m sure, love this.
If you are into blues or folk I urge you to visit and have look and listen. It’s free!
