Being so used to XP on my other computer, getting digital out from usb was easy.
Just setting up my new one which will offer really high bit rate too I notice, but does anyone know how to get the audio to go via usb? I just get speakers and can't get it to send out which is a pain.
I'm going into the Micro and driver installed and report shows it is working but I just get sound from speakers, not the amp.
Using Foobar .... Do I need to set that up?
Why is it so damned complex on 8.1?

Did a test on 8.1 and there is a signal. So it looks like I need to configure Foobar? Or do I need to configure Windows?
I'm very confused as to what's going on.

I don't have much experience with 8/8.1 but from what I've seen it has the same functionality as any previous Windows just placed somewhere you wouldn't expect. You need to find the Sound icon in the COntrol Panel and set the iFi as the default outpout device. That will work for all sound that goes through Windows itself but for Foobar you need to set it up within itself. I strongly suggest you use ASIO as output in Foobar, and in case you don't know how to do it in our blog I explain it step by step. As the iFi supports DSD, installing the SACD plugin could also be a good idea.

It's good Javier!!!
Does it hurt to have the bit rate high?
Ie what happens when bit rate is lower. Does it just play at bit rate of the music up to maximum set on computer?
The maximum is true studio quality at 32 bit 192000 HZ. I wouldn't want low res files to be converted .....
I really don't like 8.1 that much tbh.

In every Windows version you can decide the output sampling rate and EVERYTHING will get resampled to it through DirectSound. The way to avoid this is by using either WASAPI or ASIO in apps that support it like Foobar (but there are many others).
Nothing wrong with resampling to higher rates as most DACs will do it internally anyway and though the iFi has an option for NOS I recommend you stay away from it with anything less than 88.2/96KHz. Microsoft's internal resampling algorithms are not specially good from a technical POV, SOX in Foobar or HPQlayer are much better.

I, too, use Foobar with ASIO which feeds my little Dacmagic XS. Currently usuing Win 8.1 on my new Toshiba laptop. Works well; sounds fab.
