Hi, Ian. Could you describe sound of Grado SR225i a bit or share your impressions. I've read some reviews and one person noticed that this model is nice for metal and classic music ( vocal ). As i'm classic music listener it's interesting matter. They are so rare piece of sound equipment.
The sr225 lacks proper deep bass to me Sergey. I think I've been spoiled in the low department. Focus is more mids and highs. So as is often said, they sound good with guitars but as far as orchestral goes, I wouldn't be too fussed about them because of the missing lower end and what I feel is a cuppiness and quite strong colouration. Pads are torture devices.
Those are the negatives as far as I'm concerned. They're ok, but to be honest, I've left them behind.
The 'I' version is just a bit less ragged in the top end compared to the old version so I guess they are a little smoother. I think their strength is with rock type music in all honesty. Where you need more neutrality as in 'orchestral' music, I don't feel that these are the best. I'd rather use an hd600/650 or AKG k702 or even better, a K712 which reproduces string tone extremely well as well as the depth of double basses and timps.
The K712 exceeds with orchestral. You get the silkiness of the violins with a strong bass grunt. Plus their quite amazing sense of space. In fact, the K712 reproduces orchestral sound better IMO than the hd650 which can put a fairly strong coloration onto strings. Filtered Senn makes it a tough call though, but the Grados just aren't in the same league IMO.
Thanks, Ian. I see sr225 don't provide any advantage over GM GMP400. Improvements in SQ need more expensive cans with higher impedance like HD800 as my amplifier has limitation concerned with output power.
The k712 isn't high impedance but it does like lots of current. Funny really that it is a third of the impedance of the hd650, but requires about the same amount of volume adjustment on amps.
Because of it's slight lack of sensitivity, noise isn't really an issue with them as it can be with the K553.
For me, the Grados are coloured and verge on harsh or 'brittle' sounding with no real depth. Bear in mind that I'm being extremely critical though and in many ways, they do have their strengths. The sr60e isn't too bad because it uses different pads which give the impression of 'mellowness' but, still there is no real depth to the sound in comparison to superior headphones.
I used to do deals on them for students who seemed to like them, but they're not for me.
I managed to find frequency graph for GM400. Ian if you find it too off you may remove this message or create another thread . I took it from same site as you early cited .
