Hi, I have a question to Frans but everybody here may participate freely. What is it legendary "body" in vocals or may be talking more generally in the sound of different musical instruments ? For example talking about modding X-Cans V.1 as it was noticed increasing value of film caps up to 4.7uF permits to increase this "body". Yes ... we intuitively could perceive "body" in reproduction of vocal of different artists as ability to present person who is singing more clearly , more really , ability to feel "live presence" of this one or just to be in some kind of the virtual reality IMHO. What about correspondence of this phenomena with frequency range it's humps or notches ? How do you friends perceive this "bodyness" in vocal or in sound?

What I have found is that 'body' is in the lowest frequency range when you talk about 'weight'. When there is too much lows at frequencies in the 100Hz to 300Hz range voices 'bloom' and become unnatural. When rolled off too soon voices sound a bit too 'thin'.
In my experience everything sounds about right if the frequency response is really flat from 20Hz (and talking - 0.5dB here, not -3dB or -10dB which is often used for headphones) everything 'fits' unless it is a studio recording where they 'played' with all sorts of effects/EQ to get it to sound 'right' on their monitors and to their taste.

Thank you Frans. I had been listening AKG K240DF long time and didn't feel this "body" in vocal and instruments and i perceived only common musical information. K240DF supposed to be studio headphones for mastering so i suppose that ability to expose "body" in sound is attribute of HP for just listening of music not for work with the sound. Same term "body" ( or better "weight" we may apply to the sound of cello for example , after tweaking of amplifier i could notice 'weight' in the sound of strings very easily depending on records.

The K240's are quite rolled off sub-bass wise. Because of the peak at 6kHz they are well suited as monitors.
There are a LOT of different K240 versions though and there is also a very wide spread in 'tonal balance' amongst all those versions.
Most sought after (for rarity and sonic attributes) are the early ones.

I find it strange that people talk about frequencies as though they're exclusive. I mean, there's a bass element in the sound of a hi-hat, yet it's just referred to as a treble instrument. Record your own voice and you'll see what I'm getting at.

It's also to do with the proximity of the mic.

Yeah that's true but people often confuse what they hear with what their ears hear. They are not the same things. Our brains filter out the audible harshness around us to a certain extent. The HD 650 in my opinion is a success for precisely the same reason. It removes the harshness that's definitely there but adds nothing to the auditory experience. It's difficult to explain what I mean. Imagine if the real world were a Grado world. Or an AKG world. I wouldn't leave the house.

I've never heard the world described in a headphone-centric manner before, but I can get a very clear picture of precisely what you just described. Well done!
