Hi guys,
I'm in Javier's corner because it's about digital source, but this is probably Frans' specialty.
I've been offline for a few months but now that my PC is installed again I want to re-transcode my flac library to mp3 for portable use. I'v recently lost all my music on my smartphone after a crash that destroyed the µSD card. I've always been able to hear some annoying mp3 artifacts and I think that was because my previous transcoding operation was far from optimal. I've learned there's a lot to be said about the right encoder and the right options. So, can anyone tell me what 'right' means in this respect, preferably with bulk transcoding options.
All help appreciated.
Cheers, Marc

The best MP3 you can achieve is 320 Kbps CBR but if space is tight (or music collection long) you can quite safely try 256 Kbps CBR. I'd suggest you try one of the standard VBR like V0 (~245Kbps). Lame is a very good free encoder and there are plenty of front ends available, including Foobar.

Thanks guys, both of you. That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Didn't know before now that there was en encoder quality setting separate from bitrate. I've used mp3tag before and it is indeed a nice program. I'll get busy soon.

Got to agree Javier, I use Foobar and lame decoder to convert into 320kbs for my phone and for use in my car. It is simple Marc if you already have Foobar? Install Lame if you don't already have it then open Foobar and highlight the files you wish to convert, then right click on the files - go down to convert - quick convert, then MP3 (lame) 320 kbs and your done (Simples)

You could even use the Discogs or Musibrainz plugin to tag the files. I use the discogs plugin and it is truly amazing if you are OCD about correct release match and such.
