A few years ago on another forum, I had mentioned to Ian that I felt really guilty, because after a load of 'encouragement' from me, my mate had gone and completely ruined the drivers in his Grado Sr-60's, in a ham-fisted attempt to do the bass mods.
Ian had mentioned that he had a pair of i-Grado's that he didn't like, so I asked him if he would sell me the drivers, so I could restore my mates Grado's to a working state. Especially as at that point he only had one pair of headphones. Ian said he would send them up to me FOC. What a star!
I thought he had already removed the drivers and that would be what he would be sending me, but it was the complete intact i-Grados. So after removing the drivers, doing the bass-mods and fitting them into my mates headphones, I was left with an i-Grado band with no drivers. I stuck it in one of my spares tins and promptly forgot about it. BTW, the sweetie tins on sale at this time of year (Cadburys Heroes, Celebrations etc) make great spares 'boxes'.
Out running one day I saw someone else wearing a pair of i-Grados, so I decided I would fit a pair of drivers into the neckband. I eventually settled on a pair of Koss '75's and just squeezed the drivers in to the Grado housing. Sound brilliant! KSC 75's are huge bang-for-buck headphones, well, clip-on's, and now the i-Grado housing has found a new use.
I recently bought this cheap-as-chips pair of "Akai" headphones from B&M for £9.99. The headphones themselves are lovely, all aluminium and leather, with a braided lead, but sound pretty poor, muddy and veiled. I plan to fit a pair of KSC 75's, or maybe a proper closed-back driver, to see what they sound like. Can't be any worse than they are now, plus I'm a bit bored ATM!
