A common thing seen on headphone sites is to cut peaks in the treble by using paper over the driver and in most cases this does work pretty well. Nice that you can also 'tune' the treble with different amounts of paper.
Tyll wrote a nice little article recently about this and found that in some cases, doing this raised distortion in the bass. He came to the conclusion that the paper might be getting blown out and sucked in by the drivers and so cause this distortion that he measured on a modded headphone that he was testing.
This makes me wonder whether some kinds of felt on the front of drivers might also produce the same effect and perhaps it might be better to have an open driver and treble? In the case of the Senn Hd650, the felt also helps to reduce unwanted resonance, but there are many who use just stocking fabric over the front and take that felt out.
