I think alot has to do with the "house" sound of the phones. I have now had 6 different Sennheiser phones, the last ones were the closed hd380 pro, 2 sets of hd650's, a 700 and now the 800. I have liked them all, and am really set on the 800 series, not the new 800s. Have sold off all but the 700's and the 800. I had a Beyer T1 version 1, which I really liked, until the left driver started to sound muddy and back it went to amazon before the return time closed. Finally put the 700's up for sale as well. The 800 is really quite capable for me. If you want to try headphones, amps or cables try this company, they rent them out by the month....https://www.thecableco.com/Product/NEW-Headphone-Lending-Library..

Denon kind of lost their way with their 'house' sound when the d series disappeared. I like the d2000 a lot except for one thing; the cup attachment always concerns me, but the sound is absolutely terrific.
Another one that I enjoy that I think others find a bit difficult to get on with is the Denon d600. I got a really good deal on mine when I noticed a sudden price drop, so I didn't pay a lot for them.
While I'm perfectly aware that they're really not a 'flat' headphone, to me, they just sound good. With films, they're tremendous with the huge bass that you can get from them. Speech is also very clear with no bass bleed to worry about into the mids. I always find that very surprising given the high level of bass that you get from them. Isolation is very good so I listen at very low levels with it which for some reason, makes them seem extremely clean.
For me, a really entertaining headphone that iften gives you a 'wow' factor with its big bass.
I always forget about the Denon because I leave it around the house and just pick it up to use with an Ipod. It's really sensitive and is a good match with the 'orrible Apple units. With Fiios, it's positively thunderous on rock.
Now that's a fun headphone!!
I've been looking for a long time to replace it with a D7100 but the price of them never came down enough for me to be bothered.

I just had a short listen to the Oppo PM-3 and I was quite impressed. It definitely fits in my "Fun" headphone category. I was only able to listen with the sound out of my phone but I didn't notice and glaring weaknesses. At $3-400 (open box/used) these could be a pretty good value. I now have some incentive to try and get a listen to the PM-2 and PM-1.
