Since moving house, I have had to make quite a few 'adjustments' to what I own/keep. I went from a bigger house to a small one, which I love, but there just wasn't enough room for all of the gear that I had in the last place. So a lot of it has now gone after being left in storage.
I did bring a 55" TV here which I love but one thing with to sound is how awful it can be. I missed my old surround system but here in my front room, there just isn't enough room for speakers all over the place (or gear). Floorstanders would take the room over.
So this week, I put the Roth TV speaker or 'sound bar' onto my TV. I only got it because it's relatively cheap and there is no sub woofer speaker to worry about.
It connects via optical, hdmi arc, wired connection and Bluetooth aptx. Lots of connection options so it's a good multi device as well. It has three modes - voice, music and movie. There are 6 speakers inside. (3 for left and 3 for right including passive bass speakers)
Voice loses bass frequencies but the sound of voices is very good. Lovely and clear. No sibilance.
Music brings in bass. It's a weightier sound and a bit thicker sounding.
Movie brings in thunder and on first listen, I felt too bassy and muffled treble. However, listening to films was a totally different experience with this mode. It seems very 'theatrical' sounding to me.
It's a compromise having a sound bar, but actually, this is cheap and does the job well. It has certainly brought my flat screen tv to life with regards to sound.
Worst aspect is the connections are UNDER the unit making it impossible to stand it in front of the to with plugs inserted. You have to have a right angled connection for this, which is what I've done. It's designed to be fitted into a wall although it does have rubber feet.
I ended up connecting via hdmi arc which is a nice feature. It's a tow way connection where you use an arc connection from the tv and if you want to plug another unit into that socket, you use one of the two on the back of the speaker. It sends the picture to the to and rerouted the audio back to the speaker. All other sockets on the to are also routed back through the arc connection so all sound goes through from whatever you connect to the tv. It helps retain a higher quality of sound.
Well, I'm impressed seeing that this sells at £125. Good connectivity and a great sound from your tv.
