My views on 'neutral sound' are finally posted. Took quite a lot of more words than I initially thought it would and still only touch barely on each aspect. Also left some things out and probably didn't put many things into words that well. It's a rough sketch so far. If you have nothing to do for half an hour or so take a look HERE (https://diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com/tutorials/neutral-sound-an-utopia/) and let me know what I need to elaborate on or clarify and what you feel is missing or doesn't belong. All opinions are welcome especially if you don't agree with some or all of it.

Very thorough Frans. The playback volume aspect almost always changes for me with every headphone. I simply find that some snap into focus straight away at low volume while others need some kick to bring them to life.
I guess that I'm looking for an 'average' volume that benefits the bass as much as possible, but doesn't turn the top harsh. It's possibly the mids that I'm naturally adjusting for and once they snap in, I listen to bass and treble quantities when judging a headphone's performance.
Some headphones also seem to squash dynamics up. Whether it's a tonal thing or mechanical I never really know, but one common reference in closed headphones reviews is the 'cuppiness' that they can bring. To me, they seem less dynamic than many.
