Frans Thank you for the information on the cables. Pretty complex, but I do understand enough to make sense of it. That will save me a decent bit of money.

Opinions vary as much as they do about anything. Just for laughs (I thought Mike was kidding) I replicated it with an Irish Euro coin (nice harp on it) and could not tell the difference. I did slap Mick's (beautyfully machined) alu ringset and end caps on my HD681 and really enjoy the looks and feel of it. This, the joint effort in those days, with Claus (now Hoved-fi founder) and Christian (disappeared from the scene) making nice headbands for it, Mick with the nicely machined parts and the filter mod all turned my HD681 in a memorabelia that sounds good as well for a really good price. Those alu rings beat the red plastic rings (the HD681-B already has better looking grey rings on it though) on every aspect. The cable came from a Skytronics headphone and is less microphonic than the original cable. Had to show my 681's as well. Mick's beautiful Aluminium rings, Frans's filter built into the capsules and Christian's cool red headband -

I wonder what went wrong... I've been active on several forums over the years but headphone-related is new to me. But it seems there's a lot of envy or competition around.

Just different opinions of what is 'accurate', what a headphone may cost and how one is getting along with other people in the forum. Also culture and might have something to do with it as well as lifestyle / values.
There are a few forums that are headphone based and some that also do headphone based audio.
I don't like huge forums but like smaller ones where one gets to know others.

I agree, Frans. A forum is way more pleasant when people know each other, but it is also quite often seen by outsiders as being an exclusive club.

If I like to post a review of one of my 'phones, it will of course be colored by opinion. But I like opinions. Doens't matter how much measuring you do, Frans, at the end all that counts for me is how it sounds to me. I cannot judge other people's ears or say the are wrong, to them I'll be wrong. At the moment I'm listening to music on my Wharfedale homespeakers and I am amazed how full they sound on low volume. And next I realize I will probably never consider any headphones a worthy replacement for that. But hey, this is the HD681 thread and talking about those, they're the second best set I own now. €20 purchase, €12 filters, €10 velours earpads. So €42 for these great sounding headphones. The only pair I like better (acually two) are the Sony DR-S5 (but not mine) and my Somic MH489. The Somic are the best I have heard untill now and more important: they sound like I want good headphones to sound. Price €42

Headphones can never replace speakers. They are 2 separate items with different goals yet both can produce sound.
The problem is audio is taste... A will say the HD681 sounds great stock, others will find it has too much bass, others may find it doesn't have enough bass. Some say it sounds warm, others say recessed mids others say bright or highly detailed. Some like it filtered some don't.
That's taste and am willing to bet all of them (unmodded) measure the same but sound different to them.
I like to get them to measure as good as possible and in that case they sound as good as possible to me to as I have 'tuned' my taste to flat. Others may have other preferences but my motto is.
WHO cares what other people think about your (fill in any gear) as long as YOU like how it sounds/plays.

The Superlux earpads are in ! My Chinese fleabay pads arrived today. Will take some measurements to see how they perform. They are of 'similar' quality but do not seem to come from the same 'place'. Build quality is seriously lacking compared to AKG and original Superlux pads (which look similar) I do like the velours better as this seems better quality. At least it doesn't 'sgueek' when it rubs against glasses. Will do a comparo later on. With it also came to discs (well not really round, one is more egg shaped and another oval-ish) that are much thicker than the Superlux foam pieces. Perhaps they filter more highs which isn't a bad thing. Will test these too.

You see, they are different. Mine have a seam and yours have a pressed finishing. What do genuine Superlux earpads look like ? Could you post a picture ?

Have been playing with them and they are not really suited for HD681 as they drop everything between 20Hz and 1kHz by many dB's. Just when I was going to put them in the pad stash the EVO popped in my mind as I did not find it as good sounding as the modified HD681.
Will report with pictures later on... gonna make a pdf for it as I tested all pads that fit on them.
Don't know when it will be finished though.

Do pads make so much difference in sound sig ?

Do pads make so much difference in sound sig ? The short answer is yes. I completed my HD681 mod a couple of weeks ago and did quite a bit of reading prior to starting it. There is consensus that the stock pads need to be replaced....generally with a K241 pad, but the SRH840 pads are close in performance. I had the SRH-840 pads so I went with them. I may still go ahead and order K241 pads. Most appear to prefer the velour pads, but I don't recall reading anywhere that velour makes a difference in the SQ. I'm sure someone will post a more complete explanation but the answer is definitely yes.

Watch this space as I am making a comparison of all possible pads that fit on these headphones.
Hope to finish writing the article in a few days.
