At the time when Wham were in fashion I was into Iron Maiden & ACDC so I detested Wham with a passion. Over the years though I've grown to respect George Michael. He was definitely a talent who didn't have his troubles to seek. What's really shocking is his age. That's very close to home and makes me think that it's maybe time for me to take a hard look at my own lifestyle. What a shite year it's been on this front.
R.I.P. George Michael

I remember I got one of his albums for a birthday present and had to force myself to smile and say thank you when I was really thinking WTF! I agree age changes many things including musical taste, I now listen to many things I hated with a passion when I was 18 and only rarely listen to what I used to love. Never been a fan of his but Wham and solo his music brings lots of very happy memories. R.I.P.

I didn't like his early stuff particularly but respected his song writing skills. Many didn't write their own in those days but Wham did. He met the other guy in school where they got together and both started out more like 'pretty boys'.
As George got older he got into all kinds of troubles which was a shame and he had a lot of problems which I thought would see him in serious trouble. Funnily enough, he was a really friendly bloke if you met him. He didn't play up to the pop star rubbish and was very down to earth. He didn't have airs and graces and was pretty good at writing songs.
He used to use Twitter a lot but did get a load of abuse so he got off and in his home life, he became more reclusive with time. He felt vulnerable. Just recently, he's been working on a documentary and had written some new songs, so he didn't expect it himself.
Very sad.

Watching him live on BBC1 is a sharp reminder of his wit and his ability to sing so well in tune live. Spot on voice. Fantastic orchestral arrangements. Beautiful songs. Great artist really and seeing him is very sad.
There will be people who focus on the lurid parts of his life and hold that against him, but as an artist, he was a terrific singer tbh.
Perhaps BBC shouldn't have forced it on the public and changed the schedules. That would probably get peoples' backs up but it was only David Walliams that got shunted to a later time and I'm tired of seeing what he thinks is funny on TV anyway.
I feel that it was a nice touch by the BBC and they should have done similar for Prince and David Bowie. Those two changed the face of pop music and were important artists.

I thought it disproportionate the way BBC changed its Boxing Day morning schedule. But, hey ho.

Oh, did they change the schedule in the morning as well Derek? I only saw a late night one where they broadcast a 2012 concert from Paris in the Opera house.
I'm surprised they didn't do something for David Bowie actually tbh.
It's also surprising that they didn't focus on the nutty episodes where he really lost control. I know a lot of people dislike him because of that which I understand really.
There is to be an album release of his in March, I think it is and it'll include the songs that he performed for MTV for unplugged. They were really nicely done. It was all arranged before his death though, so I guess we will be seeing a series of remastered releases now.

An online friend of mine who's opinion I value declared yesterday that Faith was his all-time favourite album and in fact a seminal piece in the history of pop music. I have the album but have never listened to it past the opening (title) track. Last night I had a listen right through. It's pants.

Well, 'You gotta have faith ......' I thought the Unplugged recording was pretty good, but not sure it got released. It's coming out in March though. He does have a good orchestral arranger. Maybe he's a bit 'marmite', or should I say 'tangerine' as opposed to an orange?

I think I liked the man himself though, music aside. He seems to have been a pretty decent - if troubled - bloke.

He meant well Gordon, but the problems!! I can't believe how he appeared on Extras as a public perception of himself. He was acutely aware of how he was perceived and had kind of turned his life around but I think a lot of his past had caught up with him.
Made me laugh when he spoke on an interview about appearing on Top of the Pops the first time and having to get a bus home. He laughed a lot at himself.

I love the flugelhorn horn on this ......
Not such good quality recording but shows his accuracy when 'live'. The vocal line on this is deceptive in that it suddenly launches into a new key mid verse which often makes singers go out of tune. That's how I remember him more than anything ... in live shows. Saw quite a lot of him.
