Just had a phone call supposedly from Open Reach claiming that an error message kept coming up. When I asked what sort of error message, she said that I was being hacked.
I said, 'Oh dear, what shall I do?'
She asked me to turn on my computer. (Obviously to get me to install a 'remote access' programme)
So I asked her for her number so that I could call back.
She hung up.
The lady was in an Indian call centre of some sort; at least that's what it sounded like.
So watch out!!!

Sounds like my call from Microsoft Tech Support at the weekend. Did your caller's number display as a local no.? Mine did so they're obviously trying to give the impression of being UK based. Gotta be on your toes these days!! Fortunately most of them aren't too convincing but I'm guessing some fall for it or they would change their pitch. "Clowns to left of me, jokers to the right, Here I am, stuck in the middle with you (hope you're not a scammer too...)"--Perhaps I'm being a conspiracy theorist here but is it a bit of a coincidence that these calls are happening just as BT is promoting their new nuisance caller service? And they have an Indian call centre (admittedly so does almost everybody else)

That wouldn't surprise me Mark. She got off quick as soon as I started to be suspicious.

They came back for round two today. I went along with what they were saying and pretended that I was doing as she said. Then she asked me a question, "what do you see? " I told her that I could see pigs flying in the sky. She hung up. This time I kept her on the phone for 10 minutes so next time I'm going to try for even longer.

I can't believe she just sat there and waited while my computer was supposedly booting up.
They use an internet line for the call so it's free, but she was pretty annoyed when I mentioned pigs.
I was actually listening to 'Animals' by Pink Floyd.

The government here had a contest to see who could come up with the best anti-robo call program. Now we have NoMoRobo. It works very well most of the time. Only problem, it only works on VoIP phone systems. I have to remember the flying pigs line the next time I get a call like that. The latest scam here is a call telling you that a warrant for your arrest has been issued for failure to pay taxes, and you need to pay now over the phone. Been a big problem apparently.

When my daughter was just a toddler, we would give her the phone every time a suspected scammer was on the other end. She would sit there and happily babble away in completely incoherent toddler speak. After a few minutes, we'd check to see if they were still on.

Today my company's owner fell for a fake whatsapp phising email asking to pay with his CC. He came to me too late and we had to call the bank and cancel his CC. He is 82 and though a business genius age starts taking toll. He didn't remember Whatsapp had been free since 2 years ago.

This is it Javier. They look for vulnerable people.
These people are working in call centres. I wonder whether the operators have any morals. To think that twice now, some woman has telephoned, trying to get remote access to my computer, with no qualms.
Perhaps next time, I won't be so nice. Basically, thieves almost entering your house electronically.

Basically, thieves almost entering your house electronically. I don't know if you know Ian but there are two FREE phone ring schemes that operate in the UK. The first one is the Silent Call Guard that hopefully blocks silent calls? 08443 722325 I think it lasts for one year then you just re-new it. The second one is the Phone Ring Scheme that should block a lot of these nuisance calls? but not international calls 08450 700707 I have registered with both of them and it has significantly reduced these types of calls. Hope this helps Chris

Thanks Chris. I think I'll give that a go. These people are real scum!!
Here's another thing that has me concerned ......
They keep asking if you're there. Obviously, you reply, 'Yes'.
The record that one word in order to access phone services that require the word 'Yes' from you. So they log in to an account if they get your details and should the service require voice confirmation, they have your voice!!!
Absolutely awful.
There needs to be a red button on phones to send a tracker out for fraud squad.
