Yeah, but I don't even know where to start I've just discovered SPL Meter and found out how noisy my jack-RCA connector is. I tap on it and it makes sounds

OK, managed (I think) to calibrate the soundcard. Some graphs showed up.
It will take some time...
EDIT: Funny thing. Seems like even EMU doesn't like itself on high levels. It confirms my impressions from early posts with O2 and Polaris. REW detected clipping while calibration on loop up until I've got around 11 o'clock on the output pot.

It is possible the output voltage can be higher than the maximum allowable input voltage. Not all soundcards do loopbacks well.
To find out if there is clipping you can loopback via the Polaris and turn the volpot down.

The plot thickens. Everybody, wanna see some fuc*ed up FR? Here is my EMU on loopback: I think it's highest time to retire this old box.

Any recommendations for a new interface? Something combining DAC and line input for measuring.

Could it be a driver issue ?
My EMU 0204 works best on ASIO What's strange is that sometimes the 'ripple' is not present.

Tried ASIO too. Getting tired with the EMU.
On REW site they recommend Steinberg UR22 MKII USB or Focusrite Novation MOSC0019 Scarlett Solo. I've also found cheap M-audio M-Track 2X2. Also some Behringers showed up that caught my attention.
All of them seem to work with 192 kHz files. What are your recommendations?

My experience with DAC's and ADC's is rather limited. The EMU 0204 is working fine so haven't really looked into other ones. It does have it's quirks though and sometimes have to switch it off and on again to get it to function O.K.
The Steinberg UR22 MKII USB is only 125 Euro at Thomann The Focusright is even cheaper (109 Euro) The Behringers are even cheaper the U-Phoria UMC204HD looks interesting.
I must admit I have no idea about how driver and support friendly they are. You can't even buy a decent USB DAC for those prices and these ones also have ADC's and lots of functions.
Perhaps compare specs....
Focusright may have the best papers driver-support-wise.

BEHRINGER U-PHORIA UMC204HD looks REALLY interesting. Always wanted to have two separate stereo outputs with monitoring, so I can properly use traktor on parties I'm not really into this DAC craze. Everything adequate satisfies me.

And today's loopback: Defective electronics is fun. Looks like EMU got scared of the Behringer...

Finally got the acrylic test plates cut. The quality of the engraving is really low - guy from the shop promised to investigate further. Problem might be the material itself. But the holes fit nicely and everything, all the angles got transferred nicely from the Polaris. I don't quite like the proportions of the assembled unit. A bit too wide for the Kameleon. I'm thinking about cutting like 1 cm from sides. But it stacks nicely now, so need to think on that some more . Also, got the Behringer. It's going back to the seller tomorrow.

High time for some closure on this topic. EMU 0404 USB gets the special award for officially being the hardest equipment ever to replace. It is just incredible. It was the third attempt to get rid of this ugly plastic box and freaking EMU won again. Yeah. I'm officially beaten. Now I think that somehow I'll get buried with it. When I got the Behringer and I was moving EMU around and I've noticed that it crapped itself as usual (blinking lights, farting from headphones) just by jerking the power cable. I mumbled "I hate you too", disconnected it and plugged in the Behringer, hoping my trouble ended. But no. Tinny, extremely distorted sound on 192 kHz. Damn... Played A LOT with the buffer settings for ASIO, checked different drivers etc. After some hours I've managed to get the Behringer to play normally, but every time I started a 192 kHz file there were two clicks in right or left channel. Press play - brief silence - pop! pop! - brief silence - song plays. Same with skipping to different part. Skip - pop! pop! - plays. Absolutely dreadful. Also, the audio itself sounded less detailed and bit narrower. So, I packed the Behringer back in the box, depressed and beaten down. Tried to fire up EMU again - it didn't even blink this time, just power LED turned on. Jerked the cable, and it started blinking and farting. I didn't really care at this moment, but I transplanted the barrel connector to a phone charger, connected it to EMU and... it immediately started working. No more weird oscillations, everything flat as it should: Also, no more hang ups or driver issues for last three days. Working like a charm. So yeah... Electronics/electrics 101. First check the PSU. Turns out that the best replacement for fudged EMU is an fixed EMU - backed up by Polaris & Kameleon combo .
