New review of this interesting album. Purple are moving into new directions following the death of Jon Lord and having Don Airey take over keyboard duties. He's used Jon's style in the album as a starter and imo moved on to some new ideas too. Worth a listen, although if you are a hardened Purple fan, you may not like the changes. I enjoyed the album a lot.

Yes it it isn't their usual 'hard' rock type of album. Tbh, Don Airey on the keyboards lights it up for me and made me realise just how much part of their sound that Jon was.

I've listened to some of their tracks and you are right Ian, I'm too much of a Purple fan to like this one, not saying it is not OK, just not to my personal taste.

Yes Javier. The old Purple sound has gone. I really like Jon's 'ghost' though.
I hope my review doesn't come across as 'offensive' to Purple fans. I didn't mean it to be.
I've never been too fussed about them other than Jon because I knew him quite well at one time and I learned a lot from him and his study pieces. I could take or leave them.
However, for non fans, this could bring them in although the album, taken as a whole seems to play around with new stylistic ideas to me. It seems as though they're finding their feet again.

I hope my review doesn't come across as 'offensive' to Purple fans. I didn't mean it to be. Not in the slightest, everyone has his/her own preferences and it is only logical that not everyone (quite fortunately) has the same taste. I like the Blackmore-Gillan-Lord-Paice-Glover albums the best.

What surprised me about Jon was just how 'grounded' he was and also very aware of orchestral music. To me, he seemed in the wrong type of band!!! They're all getting quite old now though, so I wonder how much longer...... another set of 'Rolling Stones'? (Although, I prefer Rolling Stones live to recorded actually!!!) I have a few Purple albums 'In Rock', 'Live at the Royal Albert Hall', 'Made in Japan', 'Purpendicular' and 'Now What'. Am I missing a real classic? If so, I'll get it just to make sure I have a balanced collection of them!!

All three are great albums, also In Rock (you already have) and Fireball.
I'm not a fan of Coverdale so even if the song are good Burn or Stormbringer are not one my favs.

I've seen worse, I remember some 25 years ago seeing people sleeping at a Motorhead concert and it was almost painfuly loud, probably they were a "bit" loaded (and not only with legal substances) but still some kind of feat.

On my third album now - 'Burn'. Has a bit more interest for me but that's the synth work I think. What it is about them is that they work as a tight group together, but I can't kind of link in with individuals. For me, the songs have really together riffs and backings for the vocalist so it sounds like'one'. Strange in that they must be playing really well together as a unit, but I find it difficult to focus on anything other than the structure of the songs which are generally pretty simple (format based) rock songs. I'd really like to like them tbh!!!! For me it's ok....... Aha - got to 'Since my Baby Left Me' on the song 'Mistreated' - now I'm starting to like this album. This one has some real emotion in there. So for me 'Burn' is the hit so far in the albums recommended!! It's the combination of Funk and Soul that do it for me. Also, a bit more prog feel? Different vocalist as well? I think Stormbringer followed this one so I'll probably like that too. Way oop ......... just hit 'Stormbringer' - I like that too. Some bluesey stuff too. Looks like the period around 1974 is the one that gets my attention!! They'd reformed then I think and sound more funky with a touch of bluse and soul!! I'll hover further around that time. Looks like I'm buying two CDs then!! The only thing I'm finding is the quality of the recordings I'm listening to are a little thin. May be a sign of those times? Bass is there, but detached and a thin sounding top. (on high hats) Mind you, that might be the rip I'm listening to. 'Come Taste the Band' has the bass back. I like this too!! I'm climbing the walls now ...........

There are so many editions of all those albums... the ones available from Audio Fidelity mastered by Steve Hoffman tend to sound the best and have the best dynamic range, if not available or too expensive then the older the better. Latest remasterings are mostly way too compressed and loud, specially the "anniversary" editions.
I guess DP is not your cup of tea. Horses for courses. I can't stand most jazz, hip hop/rap drives me mad, modern classical bores me to death, etc.

It's funny Javier, the classic lineups are the ones I think I have most problems with. (at least I think)
The period I really like is 1974 - 1976. I really like 'Come Taste the Band' but I've been doing some reading up on them and this one was the last before they split again and the guitarist died after a drug overdose.
The three albums from this period kind of feature some of the individuals a little more and they contain a bit more prog and 'funk' feel.
'This Time Around' is a very odd Deep Purple song. It just doesn't sound like them. (From 'Taste the Band') I think the fans are right hen they felt that the band had lost their identity here!!
The earlier ones are 'pure' American type rock and I think that's what I can't identify with I think.
You know, I've been in the USA quite a bit and it's difficult listening to the radio there with myriads of rock groups who remind me of them!!! The States seem to be plastered with big sounding rock bands, but one I love is the one Chong saw recently, Aerosmith. I like them a lot in spite of their 'Americanisms'.
To me, Deep Purple don't seem like an 'English' rock band which may account for their success all over the world!! I find it difficult to identify with them, although I am very fond of Jon Lord's keyboard work and know it well.
I'm not exactly sure what it is about them tbh ......

It's not the quality Chong, it's the music. I can get past all the hi fi stuff and zone in. I just don't identify with it that closely I think. The 70's albums I like but that's not the classic line up is it? Maybe I'm on my own here ...... Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike it either. Maybe it'll grow on me?
