I do like folk music. (Well certain folk music) I do find it quite surprising that hi fi folk don't particularly talk about much of it since it's often acoustic music and can be quite entertaining.
The Battlefield band has been around for 30 years and originate in Scotland. The indeed have a Celtic sound but also feature bagpipes!! (along with whistles, acoustic guitars and a fiddle player of course!!)
They play with a lovely 'lilt' and yes, it reminds me of Ballamory. (A Scottish Childrens' TV programme with some very odd characters!!)
Their music is light hearted with plenty of enthusiasm in a more traditional format. Lots of Scotch 'Snaps' - where they play a really fast note on the beat and move to another very quickly. For music readers - a semi-quaver followed by a dotted quaver, or a dotted rhythm played backwards.
If you listen carefully to the playing, you can hear the players kind of 'leaning into' the rhythms and introducing mild accents that give this music its lovely 'lilt.'
That 'lilt' remains in the Celtic language songs and the way that they say the words. Scots Gaelic is a softer sound than you would imagine if you know how they tend to speak English with that accent. Their own language is actually very soft sounding.
I like their music a lot and they have released a new album called, 'Room Enough for All'. It's on Spotify and is really quite nice.
