Now, she's 12 and teenager years are closing in, Lucy is fast becoming 'image' conscious so she went for the haircut today. Helena bravely stepped in with the scissors while I experimented with another mini home movie!!
I enjoy looking at difficult situations and see how to get around them so for technos .....
In an echo ridden kitchen with mixed tungsten and daylight for the picture. The dishwasher was also going so isolating the speech was a problem. I used the Audio Technica at2020 studio mic into a Saramonic preamp that provides 48V phantom power and placed it on a stand, as close as I could to the two of them in order to reduce the dishwasher. (The Mic has a cardiod pattern so I kept the dishwasher to the side of it)
Saramonic fed into a Zoom H1 recorder set at 40 (which reduces recorder inbuilt noise and the Saramonic set as low as possible to get peaks at -12db)
I edited the sound on Audacity. Very little to do actually. Some compression in the really quiet sections with sudden bursts of noise. (4:1 ratio) Normalized some sections on my video editing programme.
Music recorded straight onto the H1 direct using a Behringher Ultravoice XM8500 dynamic mic and then mixed into the soundtrack at a low level. Raised at start and end and at the point where Lucy realises her hair has gone!!
Just a bit of fun, but just shows how good modern gear is in difficult, noisy conditions with mixed lighting to contend with on the camera as well.
