Thanks to Syd, who is selling his HD650, it got me looking at the whole family. I checked FR on Golden Ears and found some similarities and small differences that I do actually detect on the HD600 and 650.
Forgetting what everyone keeps on about - a veil? I don't really hear a veil. This may be due to different lines and small changes being made.
Many don't like the 'darker' sound of the HD500 -HD600 family. For me, they seem fine and imo, there are many headphones that are really a bit too sharp up top. Those types of headphone are fine for short listening periods and revealing and all that, but for comfort and long term listening, this Senn family takes a lot of beating.
I use the HD600 quite a lot with a tubey amp - the lovely Sunrise and for me, it's open, clean and pretty well balanced frequency wise. Horse for courses, but one thing that did occur to me is when people are particlarly looking at the Senn family, they're not sure what's for the best for the kind of money that they asking for. It staggers me to think the HD650 has reached the £300 mark, so could be an expensive mistake.
Looking at the FR graphs doesn't tell the whole story, but it is basically painting a picture of what I hear on the HD598, 600 and 650.
Of course, for people on a real budget, we can step lower and remain respectable with the HD558 which I didn't find too bad if I'm honest. I haven't heard the new HD558. Woulod love to tbh.
Anyway - here are the graphs to compare for anyone considering joining the Senn sophisticated sound:
HD518
HD558
HD598
HD600
HD650
Most sloping down, so they are warm sounding except for the HD600 which isn't bad at all as far as FR goes. I'd like it to go deeper in a more convincing way, and the HD650 kind of tries to give that impression but it doesn't delve right down like the T40 or T50. The bass hump makes you think it's pumping out loads of bass, but not deep enough for me really.
In my experience, the 500 series are not too shabby either. They have a suck out in common around 10KHz I think it is but they are a lot less money than the HD600 or HD650.
IMO, the 500 and 600 series are a very impressive line of headphones which in the past, I have taken for granted if I'm honest. They do a lot very well. The T40/T50 has been a nice audio lesson for me. They do nothing that you would call 'spectacular' - no big fat bass. No searing treble, but they do sound 'right'.
Well, the Senns are kind of similar in a way, in that they aren't what I'd call 'fireworks' headphones, but they do a lot right and also offer different related headphones at quite wide price levels.
Just one thing with the 500's - the 518, 555 in particular can sound quite heavy in the bass in comparison to the 598 and 600. Still good value imo though.
